Dean Wolstenholme Jr., After the Hunt

WOLSTENHOLME, Dean Jr. (1798-1882). After the The Hunt. Oil on Panel. 14 x 18 inches framed. Dean Wolstenholme Junior was born near Waltham Abbey in Essex, on April 21, 1798. He inherited both the love of sport and artistic gifts of his parents; and he contrived to indulge the former by following hounds in Essex and Hertfordshire, while his talents were directed and fostered by his father, who had long made his mark. From childhood the younger Wolstenholme evinced the keenness for sport, fox-hunting particularly, and the love of animals. He was always among horses and dogs; and his affection for the former once led to a nasty mishap when about fourteen years of age, at Chelmsford, he had a piece bitten clean out of his cheek by a vicious coach-horse. The piece was sewn in by a surgeon, but he carried a conspicuous scar all his life. Very early in life he showed a love of drawing which induced his father to teach him the elements of art, he studied in his father?s studio and then trained at the Royal Academy. Wolstenholme enjoyed long travels on foot to observe the countryside sketching along the way. At the age of seventeen he began the art of engraving which he eventually mastered and began to engrave his work as well as his father?s. The artist?s attention to engraving most probably held him back from the wider success he might otherwise have won as a painter. His first Royal Academy painting was exhibited in 1818 when he was twenty years old. Following this exhibit commissions came freely with works produced for important patrons such as Earl of Egremont, Lord Glamis, Lord Dacre, Colonel Joliffe, and Philip Booth Esq. Dean Wolsteholme exhibited for the last time in 1859 at the British Institute, he continued to paint up until a short time before his death.
