Christopher Wood, British 1901-1930 - Breton Woman, c.1930; pencil on paper, 16.5 x 11.5 cm Provenance: with Redfern Gallery, London (according to the copy of a label attached to the reverse of the frame); Christie's, South Kensington, 2nd May 1991; Abbott & Holder, London, 20436, October 1991, purchased from the above (label attached to the reverse of the frame); private collection Note: Wood created a number of works relating to Breton women in 1930, shortly before his death, including the paintings 'Breton Woman at Prayer, 1930' now in Southampton City Art Gallery and 'Pony and Trap, Ploaré, Brittany, 1930'. Wood first travelled to Brittany in 1929 and would right about his experiences to his friends Ben Nicholson and dealer Lucy Wertheim. These works were exhibited at the Redfern Gallery in 1947. This work features the distinctive Breton cape, seen in other drawings and paintings.

Exhibited: London, The New Burlington Galleries, Christopher Wood Memorial Exhibition, 3 March - 2 April 1938, number 838 (?). Wood discovered the small fishing port of Tréboul in Brittany in the summer of 1929 and returned the following summer. During this final period in his short life, Wood producede some of his finest works, distilling all he had learnt in Paris from the works of his idols Picasso, Van Gogh and Rouseeau and everything he had developed alongside Ben and Winifred Nicholson. Wood's late work has a lyrical freshness and intensity of vision, combined with what Gwen Raverat described as fashionable clumsiness.
