Betty Woodman(1930-2018)
Who is Betty Woodman?
Betty Woodman was born in 1930 in Norwalk, Connecticut and she grew up outside Boston. She studied pottery at the School for American Craftsmen, Alfred University, Alfred, N.Y. In 1952 she traveled to Italy and worked with Giorgio Ferrero, a painter and Leonello Fallacare, a sculptor. Both were making pottery for a living. She was enormously influenced with the making majolica pottery within a Mediterranean tradition, but with inspiration drawing from various other cultures world wide. Since 1967 she has maintained a residence in Italy as well as in Colorado and in New York City.Woodman’s earthenware forms are brightly colored with loosely applied decorative glazes. While her vessels have functional roots, they are clearly sculptural objects with emphasis on plasticity of clay as the vital medium of choice for this artist. Her works are owned by museums and collectors worldwide and her exhibition record is extensive.

Monumental Betty Woodman Sculpture

Lot 162: Monumental Betty Woodman Sculpture

Auction Date: Nov 09, 2019

Estimate: $8,000 - $12,000

Description: Work is titled "Roman Reflections." Provenance: Personal Collection of Gloria Luria, Bay Harbor Islands, Florida. Exhibited: "The Ceramics of Betty Woodman," 1985, Gloria Luria Gallery.

"Starting in 1966 when she opened the Gloria Luria Gallery in Miami and for three decades thereafter, Gloria was the leading advocate of contemporary art in South Florida. She was first listed in 'Who’s Who in American Art' 1973. Gloria Luria was a founding member and president of the Art Dealers Association of South Florida in the 70’s. Gloria was instrumental in first bringing 'Art Miami' to the Miami Beach Convention Center, which in turn paved the way for Art Basel."

As a contemporary art enthusiast and collector for over 50 years, Gloria Luria has made it a priority to share her passion for art by donating numerous pieces to museums in both South Florida and New York including the Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) and the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art where Gloria is a 'Fellow for Life.' As recent as February 2019, Gloria was honored by the Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) for being a 'bold trailblazer who exhibited women artists long before it was in vogue. At 93 years of age, Gloria’s passion for and involvement in the art scene continues to this day." [excerpt from "Property from the Collection of Gloria Luria" provided by the consignor; please refer to detail images in the listing for the complete text and images.]
