260 pp. 7 1/2 x4 1/2, original gilt-lettered green cloth. First Edition. Rev. James Woods, a Presbyterian minister, traveled with his wife around Cape Horn to San Francisco in the summer of 1849, and shortly therafter removed to Stockton, where he established a church for that community. Kurutz notes that "his recollections are much more than an ecclesiastical history, as they give an articulate and human picture of life in that gateway to the Southern Mines...."
