        Woodward (George Moutard, 1760-1809) Grotesque caricature of a Georgian Gentleman, point of the brush and ink, watercolour, inscribed 'G.M. Woodward' in the lower right corner, on buff wove paper without watermark, sheet 220 x 165 mm (8 5/8 x 6 1/2 in), hinged onto old paper support, spotting, and exposure lines, handling creases and small nicks to edges, unframed, [circa 1790s] ⁂ Highly distinctive drawing by the caricaturist from Stanton by Dale, Derbyshire; a contemporary of Gillray and Rowlandson. The present sheet bears some comparison to the grotesque portraits found in the etching by Isaac Cruikshank after Woodward, A collection of hobgoblins [see BM Satires 8915], as well as the many giant headed caricatures produced after Woodward's drawings in the 1790s.

        George Murgatroyd Woodward (British, 1760-1809), possibly engraved by Cruikshank The Symptoms of Drinking, 1790 - The King; Our Old Friend; Integrity to Those who wear the Robes of Justice; Delicate Pleasures to Susceptible Minds; The Queen and Family; and The Democrats Thoughout the World inscribed "G M Woodward Del" and with title, published by Wm Holland N 50 Oxford St engravings (6) - considered as very rare by Suckling and Co of Cecil Court h:24.50 w: 18 cm George Woodward was born in in Derbyshire - he enjoyed drawing caricatures of his friends and neighbours and began to acquire a reputation as a caricaturist. He moved to London in 1785 and began to publish his prints. In 1790 he published a set of six caricatures under the title 'Symptoms of Drunkenness'. Woodward was a friend and drinking companion of his fellow artist, Thomas Rowlandson. Woodward died at the Brown Bear public house in Bow Street, London, in November 1809, of dropsy, with a glass of brandy in his hand. He was buried at the expense of the landlord. His work is represented in the collections of the British Museum, the Cartoon Art Trust and the V & A; the Derby Local Studies Library, the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, and Leeds City Art Gallery.
