        Hand-coloured lithographs, 35 x 45 cm, velin paper, signed in the stone (several tears and stains, mostly in margins). - Thomas Worth designed many satires for Currier & Ives devoted to the experiences of riders and drivers. This shows white men driving fast buggies during races, and black men boxing. Some are of the firm's Blacktown series, which might be perceived as racist or offensive by today's moral standards.

        Three Antique Thomas Worth (1834-1917) "Darktown" Currier & Ive 19th c.Lithographs. Each 16"x12", mounted to boards 21"x17 1/2". Weight 2 pds 6 oz. All are in poor condition. All are original. An illustrator, Thomas Worth was one of the best-known artists for the New York lithography firm of Currier and Ives, beginning that association in 1855. Much of his popularity was tied to his comical genre scenes, especially for his Darktown series, which was "overtly racist" (Reed 27) with depictions of African-American figures.
