Bubb > Kuyper: Auctioneers of Books, Fine Arts & ManuscriptsArtist: WILM WOUTERS (1887-1957) Size: 31 1/8 x 46 1/2 in./79 x 118 cm Van Leer, Amsterdam "Rascal!" Scoundrel rogue ragamuffin. That's what a boefje is, and Wilm Wouters' louche character portrait couldn't be more evocative of the type dangling cigarette, patched-up knees, sloppy paperboy cap and a bottle in the bag, looking casually tough while lifting a trinket or two from the nearest unattended stash. The art is advertising a play of the same name, based on a 1903 book by journalist Marie Joseph Brusse. But there might also be a bit of expressionistic self-portraiture in here as well; Wouters was himself a bit of a ragamuffin, running away from school to work first in the merchant navy, and then at a sawmill, before being encouraged to attend an art academy. That would begin a long career in portraiture; a major retrospective of Wouters' work was held in The Netherlands in 2015. (Theater; Art Nouveau)
