DIE AUFERWECKUNG DES LAZARUS Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 132 x 170 cm. In dekorativem Rahmen. Beigegeben eine Expertise von Dr. Ursula Härting, 28. November 2023, in Kopie. (1481092) (18) Joachim Antonisz Wtewael, ca. 1566 Utrecht – ca. 1638 ibid., workshop of THE RAISING OF LAZARUS Oil on canvas. Relined. 132 x 170 cm. Accompanied by an expert's report by Dr Ursula Härting, dated 28 November 2023, according to which the present painting is one of several autograph, slightly modified versions of the well-known composition. Another signed version by the artist depicting the Resurrection of Lazarus, probably created in 1610, was offered at Sotheby's, New York on 25 January 2007, lot 26.

Wtewael, Joachim Antonisz. (Kreis-Werkstatt/Circle-Studio) Utrecht 1566 - 1638 79 x 63 cm Ariadne on Naxos. Oil/canvas, relined. Lit.: Bosquet, Jacques; Mannerist Painting, The Art of Europe from 1520 to 1620; Munich 1985, pp. 162., fig. 9; Grzimek, Günther; The Dawn of the Modern Age. Handbook of European Mannerist Paintings; Catalogue of the Grzimek Collection, p. 32 ff., cat. ill. no. 1. In his catalogue, Günter Grzimek lists Cornelisz van Haarlem (1562-1638) as a possible artist alongside Joachim Wtewael. However, a comparison with the painting ‘Lot and His Daughters’ from the H.C. Maasdijk Collection (The Hague), in which the ‘identical’ figure is depicted as one of Lot’s daughters, rules out van Haarlem. A similar depiction of an androgynous, youthful nude figure can be found in numerous paintings by Wtewael, such as in the figure of Sebastian in the ‘Martyrdom of St Sebastian’, Nelson-Atkins Museum, Kansas (RKD-Images 219798), or in the figure of Andromeda, drawing ‘Perseus and Andromeda’, Albertina Graphic Collection, Vienna. (RKD-Images 21384). It is therefore evident that figure types from the repertoire of Wtewael’s workshop have been incorporated into a wide variety of compositions and iconographic themes. Whether our ‘Ariadne on Naxos’ (who might have coined the title-it could just as easily be a slumbering Venus or Danae? Or perhaps one of Lot’s daughters) was intended as a stand-alone figure or as a model for a larger composition remains unclear. In its assessment of the painting “Loth and…” from the Maasdijk Collection, now in the Central Museum Utrecht, as “Naar Wtewael” (18th century?), although it is unclear whether this “Naar” (after) refers to a specific painting by Wtewael or to his style in general (RKD-Images 46577). In the catalogue: Old Master Paintings. An illustrated summary catalogue. (Rijksdienst voor Beeldende Kunst) 1992, the painting “Loth and…” is still attributed to Joachim Wtewael. Wtewael, Joachim Antonisz. (Kreis-Werkstatt/Circle-Studio) Utrecht 1566 - 1638 79 x 63 cm Ariadne auf Naxos. Öl/Lwd., doubl. Sammlung Grzimek; Süddeutsche Privatsammlung. Lit.: Bosquet, Jacques; Malerei des Manierismus, Die Kunst Europas von 1520 - 1620, München 1985, S. 162 f. mit Abb.; Grzimek, Günther; Vom Aufgang der Neuzeit. Handbuch von Gemälden des europäischen Manierismus; Katalog der Sammlung Grzimek, S.32 f., Kat.-Abb. Nr. 1. Im Katalog: Old Master Paintings. An illustrated summary catalogue.

Joachim Anthonisz Wtewael (Utrecht ca. 1566 - 1638) workshop/pupil of Jesus Blesses the Children Oil on canvas 131 x 176 cm The artwork is a splendid replica of the small painting in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. Given its high quality, it was most likely executed either by excellent painters from the master's workshop or later, after the death of the master, by a skilful pupil and capable of both painting the artwork perfectly and capturing and conveying its aesthetic essence.

DIE HEILIGE FAMILIE MIT JOHANNES UND MUSIZIERENDEM ENGEL Öl auf Holz. 37,8 x 53,1 cm. In ebonisiertem Profilrahmen. Lowenthal in European Paintings - From 1600-1917. Baroque, Rococo, Romanticism, Realism, Futurism, London and New York 2001, pp. 11, 13-17, 86, 104-05, reproduced in colour p. 15; P. Helmus, Arthur k. Wheelock, National Gallery of Art, Wash. Wheelock , National Gallery of art Washington, Pleasure and Piety, The Art of Joachim Wtewael, reproduced pages 18-19. Size: 41.5 x 56 cm; 53.5 x 68 cm (frame). This is Wtewael's largest piece on copper of this subject which was one of his favourites. It is probably a late work as it shows the artist's move in 1612 towards a more classicist style, after which he stopped painting the small erotic mythologies on copper which had dominated his output since the late 1590s and which are undoubtedly his greatest achievements as a painter, in favour of larger works on panel. Four other versions of the subject on copper are known: one in the Mauritshuis, The Hague, dating from 1601; another in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, executed around 1606-10; another sold at Christie's London, dated 1610; and a small oval. While substantially larger than these other four known versions, the present version differs most markedly from them in its horizontal format and in the greater subtlety of its subject. Where in the first two versions of the Getty and Mauritshuis Mars and Venus are uncovered and the gods openly mock them with their laughter, here their interrupted union is suggested simply by their nudity and the superimposition of a leg, while the open laughter of the gods has given way to smiles. It is impossible to say whether this change is the result of a patron's wishes or an artistic impulse on Wtewael's part, but the fact that the recently discovered 1610 version is neither as explicit as its predecessors, nor as subtle as the present 1611 version, would suggest that it has more to do with a progressive reflection within the artist's mind, probably in response to the growing Calvinist puritanism that pervaded Utrecht at the time. The subject is treated in much the same way in all versions. In an earlier, separate scene, Vulcan is seen through a door at the rear forming a fine metal mesh. In the foreground, Mercury, who envied Mars for his relationship with Venus, reveals that their union was interrupted under an elaborate canopy, while Cupid, who had instigated the affair, hovers over them. Vulcan, wearing the same hat in the Getty and ex-Christie version, prepares his mail. Other gods, not always the same from version to version, jostle for a view. Here Ceres pulls back the last curtain and Apollo rushes down from above to pull back another. The scene is full of erotic innuendo, particularly in the placement of Mercury's right hand on the pudenda of the caryatid on the bed and, despite the mythological subject, makes several references to contemporary life in the furniture, which is for the most part contemporary in style to the painting. Joachim Wtewael was a leading exponent of late Netherlandish Mannerism in transition to the Baroque. After training in the art of glass carving, an activity in which his father was engaged, he embarked on a journey through Italy and France during which he met his principal patron of those years, the bishop of Saint Malo, Charles de Bourgneuf. In 1592 he returned to Utrecht and joined the guild of chairmakers to which the painters belonged until 1611 when the Guild of Saint Luke was established, of which he was one of the promoters.

CHRISTUS IN DER VORHÖLLE Öl auf Holz. 37 x 30 cm. (931671) Joachim Wtewael, 1566 - 1631, circle of Christ in Limbo Oil on panel. 37 x 30 cm. The Dürer monogram is painted on a painted wooden beam at the bottom left. Early 17th century. Oil painting after a graphic artwork by Albrecht Dürer (1471 - 1528). Notes: According to Dr Rainer Stüwe "due to the emphasized muscly constitution of the bodies and the softly shaped heads the origin of the painter can be narrowed down to the circle of the Dutch master painter Joachim Wtewael from the early 17th century".
