  • 1942 WU HUFAN LANDSCAPE FAN PAINTING
    Aug. 21, 2026

1942 WU HUFAN LANDSCAPE FAN PAINTING

    Est: $3,000 - $5,000

Artist(s): Wu HuFan (1894-1968) The present fan painting depicts an autumn landscape of rocky outcrops and densely wooded hills rendered in delicate tones of ink, green, and warm ochre. Ancient trees with autumn foliage emerge among layered cliffs, while distant waters and low-lying clouds create a sense of quiet seclusion. The fan format encourages a compressed and rhythmic composition, allowing the artist to balance rugged mountain forms with richly textured vegetation. The use of mineral pigments and finely articulated foliage reflects the artist’s admiration for classical landscape traditions, particularly the blue-and-green style associated with Song and Yuan painting. The warm autumnal accents provide a subtle contrast to the restrained palette, enhancing the lyrical quality of the scene and emphasizing the changing seasons, a subject long favored by Chinese literati painters. The intimate scale and refined execution of the present work exemplify the scholarly and decorative qualities that distinguish Wu Hufan’s landscapes. Ink and color on paper, Yisebiao mount, Fan Painting Dimensions (Painting View/Sight): 19cm H x 52cm W Dated: in Summer day of RenWu year (1942) Signed/Seal(s): An Seal, signed PROVENANCE: Acquired from a prominent collector, representing an important private collections. The collections presented and offered up to auctions from Lot 25 through Lot 136; and additional related documents and or manuscripts from Lot 137 to Lot 228. Wei Tao-Ming (Wei Daoming), (October 28, 1899 - May 18, 1978) was a prominent Chinese diplomat, statesman, and senior official of the Republic of China. Born in Jiangxi Province, he studied law in the United States and became active in the Nationalist government under Chiang Kai-shek. During the Second World War, Wei served as the Republic of China's Ambassador to the United States from 1942 to 1946, playing an important role in strengthening Sino-American relations during the Allied war effort. He later held several key government positions, including Governor of Taiwan Province (1947-1949), Ambassador to Japan, and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China from 1966 to 1971. Wei remained an influential figure in Chinese diplomacy throughout the mid-twentieth century and was closely involved in the Republic of China's international affairs during a period of major political transition in East Asia. ARTIST BIO: Wu HuFan (1894-1968) was a leading traditional painter, known as a collector and connoisseur, as well as for his landscape works. Born in Suzhou in the Jiangsu province, Wu was the grandson of calligrapher and painter Wu Dacheng, and, from a young age, was able to study the works of masters such as the "Four Wangs" of the Qing dynasty. He later studied the painting of Dong Qichang and other artists from the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, the Northern and Southern Song, and Yuan and Ming dynasties. Wu spent the early part of his life in the Shanghai region, and, following the establishment of the Peoples Republic of China in 1949, taught at the Shanghai Institute of Chinese Painting. He went on to become one of the city's most important connoisseurs, writing extensively about the works in his collection. Wu was known for his elegant brushwork, as well as his delicate ink tones and textured rendering of mountains and trees. His work was firmly rooted in tradition, characterized by clearly defined foregrounds, middle grounds, and distances, and made more modern by his use of color. In particular, Wu's work is noted for its lack of any reference to the dramatically shifting political landscape of 1950s and 1960s China. Although Wu focused primarily on landscape paintings, he was also interested in drawing, and executed a number of flower and bamboo works.

1943 WU HUFAN LANDSCAPE FAN PAINTING

    Est: $3,000 - $5,000

Artist(s): Wu HuFan (1894-1968) The present fan painting depicts a secluded mountain retreat nestled amid rocky cliffs and ancient pines. At the center of the composition, a solitary scholar appears seated within a grotto, surrounded by towering trees and layered rock formations. Executed in delicate blue-green mineral pigments and finely controlled ink, the composition reflects the intimate scale and poetic sensibility traditionally associated with fan paintings. The curved format encourages a concentrated arrangement of forms, allowing the artist to create a harmonious balance between rugged landscape elements and the contemplative human presence. The secluded scholar, hidden among mountains and pines, embodies the literati ideal of withdrawal from worldly affairs and spiritual cultivation through communion with nature. Dedicated to Dongyuan Acquired from a prominent collector and representing an important private collections. Wang Dongyuan (February 13, 1898 - April 8, 1995), originally named Xiu Yong, was a native of Quanjiao, Anhui Province, with ancestral roots in Huizhou. He was a prominent political and military figure during the Republic of China period and served as a Lieutenant General in the National Revolutionary Army of the Kuomintang. He participated in military campaigns against the Red Army and held several important positions, including Chairman of the Hubei Provincial Government and Chairman of the Hunan Provincial Government. In 1949, he followed the Nationalist government to Taiwan. After relocating, he served as the so-called “Ambassador to South Korea” for the Taiwan authorities from 1951 to 1961. In 1970, he became a policy advisor to the Office of the Taiwan leader. In 1971, he moved to the United States, where he later settled. He authored a book titled A Brief Account of a Floating Life. He passed away in Los Angeles in 1995 at the age of 97. ARTIST BIO:Wu Hufan (1894-1968) was a leading traditional painter, known as a collector and connoisseur, as well as for his landscape works.

吳湖帆(1894-1968) 商微子鼎全形拓 水墨紙本 立軸 Ink on paper. Hanging scroll. Inscribed twice and signed Wu Hufan, with three seal marks of the artist.
