The collections presented and offered up to auctions from Lot 32 through Lot 108; and additional related documents and or manuscripts from Lot 312 to Lot 348. Tsiang Tingfu, Jiang Tingfu (17 February 1895 - 9 October 1965), was a historian and diplomat of the Republic of China who published in English under the name T.F. Tsiang. Tsiang was born in Shaoyang, Hunan. Tsiang's education from his teenage years had been Western and largely Christian, and he converted to Christianity at 11. Having been urged to study in the US by his teacher from a missionary school, he was sent in 1911 to study in the United States, where he attended the Park Academy, Oberlin College and Columbia University. His dissertation, "Labor and Empire: A Study of the Reaction of British Labor, Mainly as Represented in Parliament, to British Imperialism Since 1880, led him into issues in the relation of foreign relations and domestic politics, which would structure his scholarship after he returned to China. After obtaining a Ph.D., he returned to China in 1923, where he took up a position at Nankai University and then at Tsinghua University. Following mounting tensions in China's relations with imperial Japan, Tsiang left academia in 1935 and joined the Chinese Nationalist government, which he served in many different capacities throughout the Sino-Japanese War. Between 1947 and 1962, Tsiang served as the Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations. He also served as the ambassador of China to the United States. ARTIST BIO: Xie Zhiliu (1910-1997), Modern Chinese Painter, Connoisseur, and Scholar. Xie Zhiliu was one of the defining figures of twentieth-century Chinese painting, celebrated not only for his mastery of bird-and-flower and figure painting, but also for his profound scholarship as an art historian, connoisseur, and restorer of classical Chinese works. Born in Changzhou, Jiangsu province, Xie showed exceptional artistic talent from a young age. He studied under notable painters such as Wu Hufan and became deeply influenced by the styles of Song and Yuan masters. His early works exhibit meticulous brushwork and an academic precision rooted in classical models, while his later style evolved toward a freer, more expressive mode that retained structural discipline. Xie’s bird-and-flower paintings are particularly celebrated for their lively brush energy, elegant forms, and subtle coloration. His depictions of orchids, bamboo, blossoms, and small birds reflect a deep understanding of natural forms, often rendered with a fusion of traditional literati spirit and modern aesthetic sensibility. His figure paintings balance refined contour lines with soft, atmospheric washes, demonstrating both technical rigor and poetic temperament. Beyond painting, Xie Zhiliu played a pivotal role in Chinese art connoisseurship. He served at the Shanghai Museum, where he helped build the institution’s scholarly foundation, conducted important research on ancient paintings, and became a leading authority in authentication. His writings, including studies of Tang-Song painting and classical techniques, remain foundational references for modern scholarship. Xie’s marriage to the renowned painter Chen Peiqiu formed one of the most respected artistic partnerships in modern China. Together, they contributed significantly to the preservation, study, and revitalization of Chinese classical painting traditions. Xie Zhiliu passed away in 1997, leaving behind a legacy that bridges classical mastery and modern innovation. His works continue to be highly sought after in major exhibitions and auctions, reflecting his status as a cultural giant of twentieth-century Chinese art.
