RAIMUNDO MADRAZO Y GARRETA (Rome, 1841 – Versailles, 1920). "Interior Scenes". Oil on canvas. Signed and dedicated in the lower left corner.

        Est: €10,000 - €12,000

RAIMUNDO MADRAZO Y GARRETA (Rome, 1841 - Versailles, 1920). "Interior scenes". Oil on canvas. Signed and dedicated in the lower left corner. Size: 49 x 62 cm; 79 x 95 cm (frame). Interior scene in which a parishioner is presented with her back to the spectator praying in solitude. The work shows a section of a church with a glimpse of one of the chapels and the confessional, with particular emphasis on the ornamentation of the place, especially a large sculpture representing a saint and the opening in which it is placed. The work reflects a scene that is part of the everyday life of 19th-century Spain, where there was such a crisis of faith that there was a proliferation of commissions featuring images linked to devotion. The son of Federico de Madrazo, Raimundo was taught by his father and grandfather, José de Madrazo y Agudo. He also studied at the Madrid School of Painting and Sculpture. In 1862 he settled in Paris, where he attended the studio of Léon Cogniet and also attended courses at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Imperial School of Drawing. Around this time he carried out his first major commission, the decoration of the Parisian palace of Queen Marie-Christine with the canvas The Courts of 1834, completed in 1865. He soon became one of the favourite painters of upper-class Parisian circles, particularly because of his gift for portraiture. His portraits were of aristocratic elegance, very soft modelling and sketchy backgrounds, loosely executed, as can be seen in works such as "Doña Josefa Manzanedo e Intentas de Mitjans, Marquise de Manzanedo" (1875) and "Ramón de Errazu" (1879), both now in the Museo del Prado. He also cultivated the genre of costumbres, so much in vogue at the time, a type of painting with a reigning decorative quality, sometimes close to that of his brother-in-law Mariano Fortuny, with whom he painted in 1868 and 1872, the latter year in Granada. Raimundo de Madrazo also took part in official exhibitions, both of fine art and of other types, and at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1889 he was awarded the first medal and honoured with the appointment of officer of the Legion of Honour. A cosmopolitan artist, he travelled to Rome and London and, from the last decade of the 19th century onwards, to the United States and Argentina, where his work was highly acclaimed. In 1904 his great friend, the collector Ramón de Errazu, bequeathed an important group of works by the artist to the Museo del Prado. Madrazo himself donated two works by Francisco de Goya to the museum in 1894, which indicates his interest in the Aragonese master's paintings. Raimundo de Madrazo is currently represented in that museum, and also in the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Orsay Museum in Paris, the National Gallery in London, the Harvard University Art Museum, the Meadows Museum at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, the Museum of the Spanich Society of America in New York, the National Theatre Museum in Almagro, the Provincial Museum in Lugo, the Alcázar Museum in Segovia, the Fine Arts Museums in Bilbao, Valencia, Granada, Zamora and Álava, etc.

        Nov. 10, 2021

RAIMUNDO DE MADRAZO Y GARRETA (Rome, 1841 - Versailles, 1920). "The vanity". Oil on panel.

        Est: €45,000 - €50,000

RAIMUNDO DE MADRAZO Y GARRETA (Rome, 1841 - Versailles, 1920). "The vanity". Oil on panel. Presents stamp on the back and frame of the late nineteenth century: Signed in the lower left corner. Measurements: 101 x 67.5 cm; 124 x 89.5 cm (frame). Placed between two mirrors, the author presents us with an elegant, subtle and delicate protagonist. Dressed in her white and pink dress, the lady holds a small mirror in which she looks at herself, leaning on a console, on the furniture a large mirror reveals her back. This arrangement indicates that the woman is probably trying to check her headdress, after having removed the large hat resting on a stool. The qualities of the materials, the silk of the dress, the upholstery, the gilding of the mirror, denote the artist's interest in capturing the qualities and his technical skill that also extends to the way of conceiving the composition, demonstrating that this is a theoretical artist, with a great academic training. Son of Federico de Madrazo, Raimundo was taught by his father and grandfather, José de Madrazo y Agudo. He also studied at the Escuela Superior de Pintura y Escultura de Madrid, where his teachers were Carlos Luis de Ribera and Carlos de Haes. In 1860 he participated in the Universal Exposition in Paris, and two years later he settled in that city, where he attended the studio of Léon Cogniet and also attended courses at the School of Fine Arts and the Imperial School of Drawing. Madrazo spent most of his life in Paris, where he married and became a leading figure in the school of Spanish painters established there. During these years he carried out his first important commission, the decoration of the Parisian palace of Queen María Cristina with the canvas "Las Cortes de 1834", finished in 1865. He soon became one of the favorite painters of the Parisian upper class circles, especially for his facility for portraiture. His portraits would be portraits of aristocratic elegance, very soft modeling and sketchy backgrounds, of loose execution, as shown in works such as "Doña Josefa Manzanedo e Intentas de Mitjans, Marquise of Manzanedo" (1875) or "Ramón de Errazu" (1879), both now in the Prado Museum. As a portraitist he was one of the best of his generation, worthy successor of his father and author of a style of meticulous and elegant realism, sometimes frivolous but resolved with an irresistible decorative instinct, key to his success among the bourgeoisie of his time, always with an absolute mastery of pictorial resources and an enormously refined chromatic delicacy. Raimundo de Madrazo also cultivated the genre of customs, so much to the taste of the time, a painting of reigned decorative qualities, sometimes close to his brother-in-law Mariano Fortuny, with whom he painted in 1868 and 1872, the latter year in Granada. Raimundo de Madrazo also took part in official exhibitions, both of fine arts and of other types, and in the Universal Exhibition of Paris in 1889 he was awarded the first medal and honored with the appointment of officer of the Legion of Honor. However, it was never necessary for him to participate in the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts in Madrid, since from a very young age he enjoyed an enormous prestige supported not only by his surname, but especially by his extraordinary faculties for painting. A cosmopolitan artist, he traveled to Rome and London and, from the last decade of the 19th century, to the United States and Argentina, countries where his work was highly recognized. Author of historical canvases such as "Cortes de 1834", which he painted for the Parisian palace of Queen María Cristina de Borbón, he produced numerous works of interiors and genre scenes for the international market, and in his youth he decorated in fresco the façades of the Madrid church of Las Calatravas, paintings that are practically lost today.

Madrazo' (lower right)oil on canvas27 3/4 x 22in (70.5 x 55.9cm) Provenance: Private collection, Kansas City, Missouri;Thence by descent to the present owner.Raimundo de Madrazo came from a distinguished artistic dynasty, which included his grandfather José de Madrazo (1781-1859), a neoclassical painter, and his father Federico de Madrazo (1814-1894), who trained in Paris with Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1805-1873) and was regarded as the best portrait painter in Spain. Born in Rome in 1841, Raimundo de Madrazo lived for many years in Paris, where he was influenced by the Belgian artist Alfred Stevens and his brother-in-law, Mariano Fortuny. From that time on, his style changed from historical and academic paintings to the more intimate genre paintings of the Belle Epoque. In 1882, with Giuseppe de Nittis, Alfred Stevens and the gallery owner Georges Petit, he co-founded the Exposition Internationale de Peinture, designed to promote foreign artists in Paris. Madrazo's most characteristic works were female portraits in elegant interiors. This is well illustrated in the present work La pintora en su estudio, where the figures are placed in an artist's studio, which serves as backdrop that showcases Madrazo's skills in depicting sumptuous brocades, silks and period dresses in a refined and elegant setting. The motif of the female artist is a recurrent one for Madrazo. The young sitter portrayed as an artist is typically a prominent lady of society who passes her time painting in an intimate studio surrounded by her model, art supplies and decorations. The influence of Madrazo's close friend and brother-in-law, Mariano Fortuny, is clearly evident in this work in the abundance of detail and mastery of color and texture.Madrazo enjoyed huge success as an artist all over the world, including the United States, where the Vanderbilts were perhaps his most faithful patrons.

A Portrait of Aline Masson Leaning on a Sofa signed 'R. Madrazo' (upper right) oil on panel 261/4 x 13 7/8 in. (66.7 x 35.3 cm.) PROVENANCE Richard Green, London. NOTES The beginning of Madrazo's true style evolved from the artistic influences of his highly acclaimed brother-in-law Mariano Fortuny and the Belgian artist Alfred Stevens. Also moved by the Parisian atmosphere, Madrazo replaced a family tradition of painting academic works with the newly acquired enthusiasm to paint intimate Belle poque scenes. By the late 19th Century, Madrazo had predominantly dismissed the Spanish artistic lifestyle and begun to concentrate on exhibiting at the Exposition Universelle de Peinture, which was designed to promote foreign artists in Paris. Raimundo was decorated with some of the most prestigious titles in art such as the Chevalier de la L‚gion d'honneur in 1878 as well as officier de la L‚gion d'honneur in 1889. The artistic contributions and accomplishments of the Madrazo clan, sometimes compared to a dynasty, during the late 19th Century are remarkable. Raimundo's grandfather Jos‚ Madrazo y Agudo, a student of David, was a famed history painter and accompanied Charles IV of Spain during his travel to France. He was then appointed the director of the Academy as well as the Museum in Madrid. Raimundo's father, Federico de Madrazo y Kunst who first studied in Paris with Winterhalter and even helped the found an art journal in Madrid, was considered to be one of the best portraitists of Spain. He won the gold medal at the Salon in 1855 and was awarded the L‚gion d'honneur in 1873. Like his father Jos‚, he became the director of the National Museum in Madrid. Raimundo's brother Ricardo Federico de Madrazo y Garreta excelled in painting the nude, genre scenes as well as portraits under the tutelage of his uncle Mariano Fortuny, and later on went as far as winning the bronze medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle. Interestingly, it was his brother Raimondo de Madrazo y Garreta, who won the gold medal at the Exposition Universelle of the same year. Aline Masson was Madrazo's favorite model and frequently posed for him. Another portrait of the same sitter was offered at Christie's, London, 15 February 1990, lot 174.

Aline en el tocador signed 'R. Madrazo' (lower right) oil on canvas 25 3/8 x 191/2 in. (64.3 x 49.6 cm.) LITERATURE C. Gonz lez y Montse Marti, Pintores Espa¤oles en Paris (1850-1900), Barcelona, 1989 (illustrated p. 165). J. M. Arnaiz, et. al., Cien A¤os de Pintura en Espa¤a y Portugal (1830-1930), vol. V, Madrid, 1991 (illustrated p. 83). NOTES Raimundo de Madrazo lived the greater part of his life in Paris. Here he gained a reputation as an internationally renowned society portraitist and as one of the most talented depictors of the tableautin, the small, intimate genre painting. In Aline en el tocador the artist shares a private moment with us. Through soft, delicate tones and a coy pose he imbues the model with elegance and modesty despite our intrusion. Aline Masson, daughter of the Marquis of Casa Riera's porter, was his favourite model. She was famous throughout Parisian society for her grace and beauty and soon became known as 'la Modelo de Madrazo' (J. M. Arnaiz, op. cit., p. 93).
