    May. 16, 2024

Raimundo De Madrazo y Garreta, Portrait of a Boy with a White Shirt and Brown Leather Belt

    Est: €25,000 - €35,000

Signed and dated upper right: R. Madrazo 20 The painting has been in the family since its creation. It depicts the son of the then German ambassador to Spain. The portrait of this boy was painted in the last year of the painter's life and is therefore one of his last works. Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta was born in Rome into a family of artists of noble origin. His grandfather was the painter and director of the Prado Museum José de Madrazo; his father Federico and his uncle Luis were also painters, as was his brother Ricardo. His brother Juan, in turn, was an architect. Accordingly, the Madrazo family is considered the most important dynasty of painters in 19th and early 20th century Spain.

  • Raimundo De Madrazo y Garreta, Portrait of Miss Elsie Woodbury Brown
    Nov. 18, 2023

Raimundo De Madrazo y Garreta, Portrait of Miss Elsie Woodbury Brown

    Est: €20,000 - €25,000

Signed and dated lower right: RMadrazo / 1898 and partially indistinctly inscribed in French Certificate Prof. Maria Teresa Escohotado Ibor, Universidad del Pais Vasco, Spain, 1st October 2020. Raimundo de Madrazo was celebrated during his lifetime for his elegant portraits of high society. Not only was he one of the most respected and important Spanish painters to live in Paris during the Belle Époque period, he also won numerous awards and attracted the attention of collectors outside France, particularly in New York and London. Representative examples of Madrazo's work can still be found in the fabled mansions of prominent American families of the Golden Age, such as the Marble House and the Breakers in Newport, Rhode Island. The Vanderbilt family were perhaps Madrazo's most loyal patrons. Their society portraits are still on display at the Biltmore House Estate in North Carolina. This previously unpublished study of the head of a young woman was only recently identified as a portrait of Miss Elsie Woodbury Brown (New York 1881-1966) (based on photographs by Prof. Dr. Maria Teresa Escohotado Ibor, Universidad del Pais Vasco, Spain). Madrazo depicted the young beauty several times. A portrait created in New York in 1899 and now owned by the Museo del Prado (fig. 1) shows her sitting in a white dress against a blue background (116 x 89 cm); another portrait from 1898 in a Spanish private collection shows her in a black lace dress with roses in her hand (see Fernando Alcolea: Modelo y amante. Sobre la idendidad del Retrato de senorea (1899) de Raimundo de Madrazo, del Museo del Prado, 2020). Elsie Woodbury Brown was the painter's favorite model during Madrazo's time in New York and Paris. She also became his lover. At the same time, the artist had an affair with Maria Hahn from Venezuela, who became his second wife in 1899. This intimate study from 1898 may be the earliest depiction of his beloved model. The portrait comes from an old family property in Jersey and may have been passed down through a family ancestor: Miss Lily Langtry (Jersey 1853 - 1929 Monte Carlo) was an actress who knew both Raimundo de Madrazo and Elsie Woodbury Brown during the time of their New York love affair. Research documents created by the owner as well as a technical investigation report on the picture are available.

He was the son and disciple of the famous portrait painter Federico Madrazo, brother-in-law of the no less famous Mariano Fortuny, brother of Ricardo Madrazo and grandson of the notable painter José Madrazo. He participated for the first time in the Universal Exposition of that same year. He lived in Paris for much of his life, where he married his cousin Eugenia de Ochoa, who died after the birth of his only son Federico, known as Cocó, who also stood out as a painter. He also became a leading figure in the school of Spanish painters in Paris. There he obtained the first medal and appointment to the Legion of Honor for his participation in the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1889. In 1869 he obtained some cartoons for tapestries by Francisco de Goya, among them Dogs and Hunting Tools, which he donated in 1894 to the Museum. del Prado, its current location. RAIMUNDO MADRAZO Y GARRETA (Rome, 1841 – Versailles, 1920). "Interior Scenes". Oil on canvas. Signed and dedicated in the lower left corner.

    Est: €10,000 - €12,000

RAIMUNDO MADRAZO Y GARRETA (Rome, 1841 - Versailles, 1920). "Interior scenes". Oil on canvas. Signed and dedicated in the lower left corner. Size: 49 x 62 cm; 79 x 95 cm (frame). Interior scene in which a parishioner is presented with her back to the spectator praying in solitude. The work shows a section of a church with a glimpse of one of the chapels and the confessional, with particular emphasis on the ornamentation of the place, especially a large sculpture representing a saint and the opening in which it is placed. The work reflects a scene that is part of the everyday life of 19th-century Spain, where there was such a crisis of faith that there was a proliferation of commissions featuring images linked to devotion. The son of Federico de Madrazo, Raimundo was taught by his father and grandfather, José de Madrazo y Agudo. He also studied at the Madrid School of Painting and Sculpture. In 1862 he settled in Paris, where he attended the studio of Léon Cogniet and also attended courses at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Imperial School of Drawing. Around this time he carried out his first major commission, the decoration of the Parisian palace of Queen Marie-Christine with the canvas The Courts of 1834, completed in 1865. He soon became one of the favourite painters of upper-class Parisian circles, particularly because of his gift for portraiture. His portraits were of aristocratic elegance, very soft modelling and sketchy backgrounds, loosely executed, as can be seen in works such as "Doña Josefa Manzanedo e Intentas de Mitjans, Marquise de Manzanedo" (1875) and "Ramón de Errazu" (1879), both now in the Museo del Prado. He also cultivated the genre of costumbres, so much in vogue at the time, a type of painting with a reigning decorative quality, sometimes close to that of his brother-in-law Mariano Fortuny, with whom he painted in 1868 and 1872, the latter year in Granada. Raimundo de Madrazo also took part in official exhibitions, both of fine art and of other types, and at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1889 he was awarded the first medal and honoured with the appointment of officer of the Legion of Honour. A cosmopolitan artist, he travelled to Rome and London and, from the last decade of the 19th century onwards, to the United States and Argentina, where his work was highly acclaimed. In 1904 his great friend, the collector Ramón de Errazu, bequeathed an important group of works by the artist to the Museo del Prado. Madrazo himself donated two works by Francisco de Goya to the museum in 1894, which indicates his interest in the Aragonese master's paintings. Raimundo de Madrazo is currently represented in that museum, and also in the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Orsay Museum in Paris, the National Gallery in London, the Harvard University Art Museum, the Meadows Museum at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, the Museum of the Spanich Society of America in New York, the National Theatre Museum in Almagro, the Provincial Museum in Lugo, the Alcázar Museum in Segovia, the Fine Arts Museums in Bilbao, Valencia, Granada, Zamora and Álava, etc.

RAIMUNDO DE MADRAZO Y GARRETA (Rome, 1841 - Versailles, 1920). "The vanity". Oil on panel.

RAIMUNDO DE MADRAZO Y GARRETA (Rome, 1841 - Versailles, 1920). "The vanity". Oil on panel. Presents stamp on the back and frame of the late nineteenth century: Signed in the lower left corner. Measurements: 101 x 67.5 cm; 124 x 89.5 cm (frame). Placed between two mirrors, the author presents us with an elegant, subtle and delicate protagonist. Dressed in her white and pink dress, the lady holds a small mirror in which she looks at herself, leaning on a console, on the furniture a large mirror reveals her back. This arrangement indicates that the woman is probably trying to check her headdress, after having removed the large hat resting on a stool. The qualities of the materials, the silk of the dress, the upholstery, the gilding of the mirror, denote the artist's interest in capturing the qualities and his technical skill that also extends to the way of conceiving the composition, demonstrating that this is a theoretical artist, with a great academic training. Son of Federico de Madrazo, Raimundo was taught by his father and grandfather, José de Madrazo y Agudo. He also studied at the Escuela Superior de Pintura y Escultura de Madrid, where his teachers were Carlos Luis de Ribera and Carlos de Haes. In 1860 he participated in the Universal Exposition in Paris, and two years later he settled in that city, where he attended the studio of Léon Cogniet and also attended courses at the School of Fine Arts and the Imperial School of Drawing. Madrazo spent most of his life in Paris, where he married and became a leading figure in the school of Spanish painters established there. During these years he carried out his first important commission, the decoration of the Parisian palace of Queen María Cristina with the canvas "Las Cortes de 1834", finished in 1865. He soon became one of the favorite painters of the Parisian upper class circles, especially for his facility for portraiture. His portraits would be portraits of aristocratic elegance, very soft modeling and sketchy backgrounds, of loose execution, as shown in works such as "Doña Josefa Manzanedo e Intentas de Mitjans, Marquise of Manzanedo" (1875) or "Ramón de Errazu" (1879), both now in the Prado Museum. As a portraitist he was one of the best of his generation, worthy successor of his father and author of a style of meticulous and elegant realism, sometimes frivolous but resolved with an irresistible decorative instinct, key to his success among the bourgeoisie of his time, always with an absolute mastery of pictorial resources and an enormously refined chromatic delicacy. Raimundo de Madrazo also cultivated the genre of customs, so much to the taste of the time, a painting of reigned decorative qualities, sometimes close to his brother-in-law Mariano Fortuny, with whom he painted in 1868 and 1872, the latter year in Granada. Raimundo de Madrazo also took part in official exhibitions, both of fine arts and of other types, and in the Universal Exhibition of Paris in 1889 he was awarded the first medal and honored with the appointment of officer of the Legion of Honor. However, it was never necessary for him to participate in the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts in Madrid, since from a very young age he enjoyed an enormous prestige supported not only by his surname, but especially by his extraordinary faculties for painting. A cosmopolitan artist, he traveled to Rome and London and, from the last decade of the 19th century, to the United States and Argentina, countries where his work was highly recognized. Author of historical canvases such as "Cortes de 1834", which he painted for the Parisian palace of Queen María Cristina de Borbón, he produced numerous works of interiors and genre scenes for the international market, and in his youth he decorated in fresco the façades of the Madrid church of Las Calatravas, paintings that are practically lost today.
