Taro Yamamoto (Japanese/American, 1919-1994) Untitled, Signed Taro Yamamoto lower right, Mixed Media on paper on canvas, 16" x 20", Framed-20" x 24". Yamamoto was born in the US but he was formally educated in the Shinto tradition in Japan. Upon returning to Los Angeles a the age of 19, he enrolled at the Arts Student League in NY. During the 1950s, he ran in the same circles as superstars like Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Mark Rothko while completing a residency at the MacDowell Colony. He practiced fast-paced "Action Painting," heavy gestural drips, and later, sharp, hard-edge geometric patterns. His works are celebrated for their highly saturated, kaleidoscopic color fields, complex textures, and spontaneous splatter lines across canvas and delicate rice paper. In 1951, he made his permanent home in the famous artist haven of Provincetown, Massachusetts. He spent the rest of his life painting there alongside his family until his death in 1994.
