Richard Yarde (American 1939-2012) Homecoming watercolor on paper 7.5 x 10" 18 x 18" as framed. Yarde‘s vision was about healing: physical, cultural, intellectual, and spiritual. From the portrayals of African American icons to explorations of his own illness, his work encompassed the wide range of the human experience: from isolation to perseverance, triumph, and pure joy. His work enriched our sensibilities as he charted a unique watercolor style. Solo and group exhibitions throughout the country have featured his paintings, which reside permanently in nearly three dozen public collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution; and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Yarde tackled the traditionally intimate art of watercolor with uncharacteristic bravado. Unlike oil or acrylic painting, watercolor brooks no mistakes. Yet Yarde painted on a heroic scale with dazzling color, rich symbols and deeply evocative imagery. Critics have written—and Yarde conquered—that his body of work was an exploration of his own history. Early on he painted with joy and verve. He would splash the Roxbury neighborhood where he grew up in the 1950s on large sheets of paper, then turn to rendering imagined scenes from the vibrant jazz world of the Harlem Renaissance.

LOT NOTES Richard Yarde’s The Savoy Ballroom, published in 1986, is a monumental tribute to the vibrant culture of the Harlem Renaissance and the legendary "Home of Happy Feet". This portfolio captures the essence of Yarde’s career defining Savoy project, which began as a three dimensional watercolor installation at the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum in 1982. Known for transforming watercolor from an intimate medium into one of heroic scale, Yarde utilized the rhythmic energy of the ballroom, where jazz and swing defined a generation, as a vehicle to explore African American history and communal joy. The 1986 portfolio represents the ultimate distillation of this vision, reproducing his virtuosic watercolors with a clarity that emphasizes his "grid-like" and "patchwork" aesthetic. The compositions within the portfolio draw heavily from archival photography, which Yarde colorized and simplified into vibrant, graphic scenes of dancers and musicians. His trademark style, influenced by the segmented construction of his mother’s quilts, uses a structural "backbeat" grid that anchors improvisational bursts of color and movement. In plates like those depicting the "Cats' Corner," the artist captures the high-energy athleticism of the Lindy Hop, rendering the figures with a "stroboscopic" sense of motion. This is a partner copy from the intended edition of 400; however it is unknown if the full edition was ever printed. Richard Yarde (1939-2011) was born in Boston, earned an MFA at Boston University, where he later taught, and he eventually became professor of art at the University of Massachusetts (Amherst). He is considered one of the most accomplished American watercolorists of his generation. His work is found in numerous public collections, including MoMA, Studio Museum of Harlem, Smithsonian Institution, Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), etc. When discussing his watercolor studies of musicians and dancers at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, Yarde stated: "The Savoy became a source of creativity, joy and strength to me which I want to share and honor." Mount Holyoke College Art Museum, in 1982, presented a traveling exhibition "Savoy: An Installation by Richard Yarde", also shown in San Diego, Baltimore and The Studio Museum, Harlem.
