Calligraphic title slip and frontispiece inscription by Feng Kanghou; colophons by Gu Wenbin, Qin Zuyong, Wu Hufan, and others. Acquired from a prominent collector and representing an important private collections. Wang Dongyuan (February 13, 1898 - April 8, 1995), originally named Xiu Yong, was a native of Quanjiao, Anhui Province, with ancestral roots in Huizhou. He was a prominent political and military figure during the Republic of China period and served as a Lieutenant General in the National Revolutionary Army of the Kuomintang. He participated in military campaigns against the Red Army and held several important positions, including Chairman of the Hubei Provincial Government and Chairman of the Hunan Provincial Government. In 1949, he followed the Nationalist government to Taiwan. After relocating, he served as the so-called “Ambassador to South Korea” for the Taiwan authorities from 1951 to 1961. In 1970, he became a policy advisor to the Office of the Taiwan leader. In 1971, he moved to the United States, where he later settled. He authored a book titled A Brief Account of a Floating Life. He passed away in Los Angeles in 1995 at the age of 97. ARTIST BIO:Tang Yin (1470–1524), also known as Tang Bohu, was one of the most celebrated painters, calligraphers, and poets of the Ming dynasty. A native of Suzhou, Jiangsu province, he is widely regarded as one of the “Four Masters of Ming painting,” alongside Shen Zhou, Wen Zhengming, and Qiu Ying. Renowned for his exceptional talent from a young age, Tang Yin initially pursued an official career but was later implicated in a civil examination scandal, which ended his prospects in government service. He subsequently devoted himself to a life of art and letters, becoming a quintessential literati figure. Tang Yin excelled in both figure and landscape painting. His figure paintings, particularly depictions of elegant ladies, are noted for their graceful lines and refined composition, while his landscapes combine meticulous detail with expressive brushwork, conveying poetic atmosphere and scholarly sentiment. His work embodies the ideals of literati painting, integrating poetry, calligraphy, and painting into a unified artistic expression. Today, Tang Yin remains one of the most admired figures in the history of Chinese art, with works that are highly prized by collectors and institutions worldwide.
