  • Qiu Ying, Wang Hui & Liu Yong – Blue-and-green landscape with inscribed poems album, ink and colour on paper, album
    Aug. 28, 2026

Qiu Ying, Wang Hui & Liu Yong – Blue-and-green landscape with inscribed poems album, ink and colour on paper, album

    Est: -

Qiu Ying (c. 1498–1552) Courtesy name Shifu, art name Shizhou, native of Taicang, Jiangsu Province. Qiu Ying is counted among the Four Great Masters of the Wu School of Ming dynasty painting. Excelling in landscape, figure and jiehua (ruled-line architectural painting), he earned particular acclaim for his blue-and-green landscapes. Carrying forward the orthodox lineage of Northern and Southern Song court academic painting, his technique is meticulous, precise and rigorous, with rich yet elegant coloration. He seamlessly merged academic formal discipline with literati poetic sensibility, standing as the culminating master of blue-and-green landscape painting in the Ming dynasty. Wang Hui (1632–1717) Courtesy name Shigu, art name Gengyan Sanren, native of Changshu, Jiangsu Province. Wang Hui was one of the Four Wangs of the early Qing dynasty and founding patriarch of the Yushan School of painting. His landscape work is distinguished by extraordinary mastery of archaic classical styles, synthesizing the Northern and Southern Schools of Chinese painting into a unified vision. His blue-and-green landscapes are built upon an ink structural framework, overlaid with clear, moist and bright color layers — accomplished yet never stiff, vibrant yet never vulgar — setting the benchmark for orthodox landscape painting in the Qing dynasty. Liu Yong (1719–1804) Courtesy name Chongru, art name Shi'an, native of Zhucheng, Shandong Province. A prominent grand secretary during the Qianlong reign, Liu Yong was one of the four great calligraphers of the mid-Qing dynasty, popularly known as the "Prime Minister of Rich Ink". His calligraphy followed the Jin and Tang tiexue (model-calligraphy) tradition, with contained, powerful brush force, rich lustrous ink saturation and composed, stately character structure. Externally soft yet inherently firm with a calm, elegant bearing, he stands as a definitive representative of Qing dynasty model-calligraphy practice. Combined Album of Painting and Calligraphy This album assembles masterworks by three celebrated artists across the Ming and Qing dynasties, presented in the classic facing-leaf format of painting paired with poetic calligraphy — a refined literati form celebrating the union of poetry, calligraphy and painting. Within the album, the blue-and-green landscapes embody both the meticulous, lush elegance of Qiu Ying and the clear, graceful refinement of Wang Hui, with layered mountain topography and timelessly elegant coloration. On the facing pages, Liu Yong’s running-script poetic inscriptions carry a rich, profound ink resonance, with verses that echo and deepen the artistic mood of the paintings. Balancing artistic excellence and literary depth with a well-documented transmission history, this album holds both exceptional collecting value and artistic merit.

Although he was not of the scholar-gentry class, his talent allowed him to be invited by many important collectors to make copies and repairs. In this way, he had access to some of the great paintings of the time and learnt to mix the classical style of Song and Yuan painters. Eventually, by sheer talent, he was regarded as one of the Four Masters of the Wu School. For a longer discussion about Qiu Ying and an example of his landscape style, see Z. Hongxing, Masterpieces of Chinese Painting 700-1900, London, 2013, pp. 260-261. He was highly regarded and popular within his own lifetime and his signature was used on many paintings sold by his studio. His daughter, Qiu Zhu, and son-in-law, You Qiu, followed him into a career in painting. Qiu Zhu's style is delicate and beautifully refined, while You Qiu also inherited his father-in-law's manner.
