Tadanori Yokoo Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1936 -

Tadanori Yokoo (Yokoo Tadanori, born 27 June 1936 in Hyogo Prefecture) is a Japanese graphic designer, illustrator, printmaker and painter. Tadanori Yokoo, born in Nishiwaki, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, in 1936, is one of Japan's most successful and internationally recognized graphic designers and artists. He began his career as a stage designer for avant garde theatre in Tokyo. His early work shows the influence of the New York-based Push Pin Studio (Milton Glaser and Seymour Chwast in particular), but Yokoo cites filmmaker Akira Kurosawa and writer Yukio Mishima as two of his most formative influences.

In the late 1960s he became interested in mysticism and psychedelia, deepened by travels in India. Because his work was so attuned to 1960s pop culture, he has often been (unfairly) described as the "Japanese Andy Warhol" or likened to psychedelic poster artist Peter Max, but Yokoo's complex and multi-layered imagery is intensely autobiographical and entirely original.

By the late 60s he had achieved international recognition for his work and was included in the 1968 "Word & Image" exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Four years later MoMA mounted a solo exhibition of his graphic work organized by Mildred Constantine. Yokoo collaborated extensively with Shuji Terayama and his theater Tenjo Sajiki. He starred as a protagonist in Nagisa Oshima's film Diary of a Shinjuku Thief.

ARTIST: TADANORI YOKOO (1936- ) SIZE: 30 1/8 x 42 1/8 in./76.4 x 107.5 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: “In April 1966, the Japanese author [Yukio Mishima] published a series of essays for young women in the women’s magazine, Josei Jishin. (A series for young men was published in Pocket Panchi Oh!) Paralleling the portrait of the virile Mishima in the upper left, Yokoo has placed the figure of a half-naked woman expressing breast milk at the upper right, perhaps alluding to a scene in a 1956 novel by Mishima, ‘The Temple of the Golden Pavilion,’ in which a woman offers breast milk to a man in a tea bowl. To this gender dynamic, the poster adds references to nation, with the rays of the rising sun, the locomotive’s steam in a shape reminiscent of the Japanese archipelago, lotus flowers, and the woodblock-inspired waves” (Elegance & Extravaganza : Japanese Posters from the Merrill C. Berman Collection, p. 75). This is a silkscreen print. (Modern; Literary)

ARTIST: TADANORI YOKOO (1936- ) SIZE: 28 1/2 x 40 3/8 in./72.5 x 102.5 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: “By this time Yokoo had made himself the undisputed master of pattern composition using traditional forms; his fans had increased; and his designs and illustrations were beginning to acquire an objective civil rights overtone. Expressions like ‘Oooah-ha-ha’ and ‘Yaah-Yaah,’ which appear among the captions for this poster, could have been picked straight out of a cartoon strip, but as always with Yokoo’s work, they serve to accentuate the effect of the poster’s visual affront to the senses. Moreover, this poster was the third that Yokoo completed after his return to Japan from his first visit to America, and the influence of the psychedelic hippy posters that were the rage in New York at the time is noticeable in his use of fluorescent inks. The poster advertises a tent show to be given Saturdays in an underground shopping plaza adjacent to Tokyo’s Shinjuku Station, a major rail terminal. Seibu (at bottom) is one of the sponsoring advertisers” (Yokoo, p. 8). This is a silkscreen print. (Modern; Artist: Yokoo)

The Hunchback of Aomori Prefecture. 1967.

ARTIST: TADANORI YOKOO (1936- ) SIZE: 28 3/4 x 40 1/2 in./78 x 102.8 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: Yokoo created this quite haunting image for the performance of The Hunchback in Aomori Prefecture at the Sogetsu Art Center in Tokyo; he also created the stage designs. “In Terayama’s [play], a former servant who was raped by her master and forced to abandon her hunchbacked baby has survived to become the last of the master’s family. Now a grotesque dowager in old-fashioned Western finery, she seeks vengeance by obsessively seducing and tormenting all the young men she meets. Her latest willing, masochistic victim is a hunchback thief, who may or may not be her lost son. A virginal young female narrator-singer also claims the love of the murdered boy—perhaps killed by his own mother in orgiastic, incestuous frenzy or in hatred. Because the town’s family records were stolen to cover up the birth, his identity is unverifiable. The play ends ambiguously, and the truth remains unknown” (Modern Japanese Theatre and Performance, edited by David Jortner, Keiko McDonald, and Kevin J. Wetmore Jr., p. 70). This is a silkscreen print. (Modern; Artist: Yokoo; Theatre)

Having Reached a Climax at the Age of 29. 1965.

    Est: $8,000 - $10,000

ARTIST: TADANORI YOKOO (1936- ) SIZE: 28 1/2 x 39 5/8 in./72.3 x 100.7 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: “A great deal of public interest was aroused by the ‘Persona Exhibition,’ a group exhibition by 16 designers, which opened at the Matsuya Department Store in the Ginza section of Tokyo in November of 1965. Yokoo, who had held his first one-man exhibition at the Yoshida Gallery in Nihonbashi that February, had excited the interest of both his fellow designers and art critics... It was Yokoo’s collection of posters which became the major talking point of the ‘Persona Exhibition.’ This poster was created especially for the [exhibition]. The caption to the poster is of a derisive nature and aimed at the artist himself: it is in English, perhaps because the message was meant to reach a world audience. It might be that the corpse hanging by its neck, centered against a background of the bright rays of a rising sun gleaming in a blue sky, a single full-blown rose clasped tightly in one hand, represents the artist’s departure from his previous style... The photograph of the baby in the bottom corner is the artist himself at the age of one and a half... What creates the powerful impression made by this poster is the strong contrast of red and blue in the pattern of the rising sun. We often come across this pattern in Oriental references by Western artists; one reason why it may be considered inherently Japanese may possibly be its association in the mind with the flag used by the former Japanese Empire” (Yokoo, p. 6). ARTIST: TADANORI YOKOO (1936- ) SIZE: 28 x 39 1/4 in./71 x 99.5 cm DESCRIPTION: “For his film, ‘Diary of a Shinjuku Thief,’ director Nagisa Oshima chose Tadanori Yokoo for the leading role. Speaking about this in the introduction to ‘The Collected Works of Tadanori Yokoo,’ poet Mutsuro Takahashi writes: ‘Leaving aside for the moment any comment on the film itself, which evoked a clamor of public criticism against its director... I think I can say that for Tadanori it provided the first opportunity to become someone else in a true sense. For some time, he claimed that he had a fondness for dressing up, and it is probably true that he experienced a kind of catharsis by appearing in the film. But as the film itself did not clearly establish the relationship between fact and fiction, so the relationship between Tadanori himself and the hero he was playing was equally vague... The coloring for the poster for his own film tends to be slightly lacking in assertiveness, and this is due to the fact that black was replaced by grey in the final monochrome plate” (Yokoo, p. 9). This is a silkscreen print. (Modern; Artist: Yokoo; Japanese; Film)

John Silver is the title of a play presented by the ‘Jokyo Gekijo’ group. Note the four advertisements in the corners, placed there by cosponsors of the event” (Yokoo, p. 6). The Crime of Debuko Ooyama. 1968.

    Est: $6,000 - $8,000

ARTIST: TADANORI YOKOO (1936- ) SIZE: 29 3/8 x 42 in./74.5 x 106.5 cm DESCRIPTION: Tenjo Sajiki, an independent, underground theatre group founded in 1967, commissioned this poster from Yokoo for the second year of its avant-garde production The Crime of Debuko Ooyama. It's an "enlarged version of an oiri-bukuro, the envelope that contains the bonus actors receive when a play is a hit. The white shapes that dominate the poster are bloated versions of the characters for oiri, which means 'overflow crowd.' The inset in the lower right corner mimics the patriotic motifs and imagery used frequently in Japanese posters around the turn of the century. Tenjo Sajiki originally conceived of itself as a 'freak show,' and... The Crime of Ooyama accomplished its purposes by using obese actresses and body builders in the nude and seminude" (Angura: Posters of the Japanese Avant-Garde, by David Goodman). This is an early and rare silkscreen poster. (Modern; Artist: Yokoo; Japanese; Theatre)

A la Maison de Civecawa. 1965.

    Est: $6,000 - $8,000

ARTIST: TADANORI YOKOO (1936- ) SIZE: 29 x 41 in./73.7 x 104.2 cm DESCRIPTION: “This poster was created for a performance by the ‘Anokoku Buto-Ha,’ the dance troupe led by dancer Tatsumi Hijikata, the owner of the Garumella Company... This poster is in fact the first where he used the famous rising sun pattern which became synonymous with the ‘Yokoo style’ in posters and illustrations, and should be remembered as being the work in which he established his own style of design... The two female nudes in the center of the poster are the work of Natsuyuki Nakanishi, the art director for the troupe, and are after the painting ‘Gabrielle Distole and Her Sister’ by an unknown artist of the Fontainebleau School... And just like the sideshow atmosphere of the dance performance itself, [the poster] invests the performance with a kind of lewdness and a terrifying fear and curiosity, the nature of which is unknown. Or, put another way, the poster becomes a visual criticism of modern dance which has become completely sanitary and harmless and no more than a mere imitation of form” (Yokoo, p. 7). This is a silkscreen print. (Modern; Artist: Yokoo; Dance; Japanese)

TADANORI YOKOO (1936- ) WORD IMAGE. 1968. 48 1/2x17 inches, 123 1/4x43 1/4 cm. Poster Originals Ltd., [New York]. Condition B+: repaired tears, creases and abrasions at edges and in image; repaired pin holes in corners; minor scuffing in image. Silkscreen. Mounted on Japan. For the seminal exhibition of 20th century posters from the Museum of Modern Art's own collection, curator Mildred Constantine assembled what Rita Reif referred to as "a landmark presentation that helped define the medium for scholars, graphics specialists and collectors" ( New York Times, June 26, 1988). The exhibition focused as much on contemporary images as historical ones, and the curators put extra emphasis on the contemporary state of graphic design by choosing Tadanori Yokoo to design the exhibition poster. For this golden opportunity, he created a very synthetic image with no typography within the image to distract the viewer. Using mouths and one large eye, he perfectly evokes the concept of "word" and "image." He employs the rays of the rising sun, one of his favorite and recurring motifs, but here, makes the colors red, white and blue for America rather than the Japanese red and white. Yokoo 546.
