Dedicated to Dongyuan Acquired from a prominent collector and representing an important private collections. Wang Dongyuan (February 13, 1898 - April 8, 1995), originally named Xiu Yong, was a native of Quanjiao, Anhui Province, with ancestral roots in Huizhou. He was a prominent political and military figure during the Republic of China period and served as a Lieutenant General in the National Revolutionary Army of the Kuomintang. He participated in military campaigns against the Red Army and held several important positions, including Chairman of the Hubei Provincial Government and Chairman of the Hunan Provincial Government. In 1949, he followed the Nationalist government to Taiwan. After relocating, he served as the so-called “Ambassador to South Korea” for the Taiwan authorities from 1951 to 1961. In 1970, he became a policy advisor to the Office of the Taiwan leader. In 1971, he moved to the United States, where he later settled. He authored a book titled A Brief Account of a Floating Life. He passed away in Los Angeles in 1995 at the age of 97. ARTIST BIO:Huang Yongyu (1924–2023) was one of the most influential contemporary Chinese artists, as well as a celebrated writer, poet, and designer. A member of the Tujia ethnic group, he was born in Fenghuang, Hunan province. Largely self-taught, Huang developed a highly individual artistic language that bridges traditional Chinese ink painting and modern visual expression. His work spans a wide range of media, including ink painting, oil painting, printmaking, and illustration, reflecting both technical versatility and creative independence. Huang was particularly renowned for his lively depictions of animals, especially owls, which became a personal emblem in his art. His paintings are characterized by bold brushwork, imaginative compositions, and a vibrant use of color, often infused with humor, wit, and a strong sense of personality. In addition to his achievements in fine art, Huang Yongyu made a significant impact on popular culture, most notably through his design of the iconic Year of the Monkey postage stamp in China.
