One of the oldest and most popular Japanese tales of the supernatural is the legend of the Hundred Night Demons, who appear between nightfall and sunrise. In this print the tale is combined with the story of the tenth-century Princess Takiyasha, who is helped by the frog immortal Nikushi to avenge the death of her father, the warrior, Taira no Masakado. She and her brother, Taira no Yoshikado, shut themselves up in her father’s Soma Palace to plot a rebellion, but a warrior from a rival clan discovers their plans. Here the warrior challenges the Princess, surrounded by night demons and multiple ghosts of her father. Size: 14'' x 9'', 36 x 23 cm (sheet); 21'' x 36'', 53 x 91 cm (frame). Artist: Yoshiiku Utagawa (1833-1903) Title: Summer Party at Ryogoku (Bridge), Tokyo [Tokyo Ryogoku Kawabiraki no Zu] Publisher: Yorozuya Magobei Date: 19th century (Meiji) Approx. Size: Framed: 21" H x 16.25" W; Sight: 14" H x 9.5" W. The construction of the Ryogoku Bridge in 1659 helped to shape the city of Edo and later Tokyo. The name of the bridge translates as 'two countries' and referred to the joining of Musashi and Shimosa Province which were prior separated by the Sumida River. It is often said that Edo was a city of rivers and canals, with travelling by boat a common mode of transport for most classes. Ryogoku Bridge was also a popular spot for fireworks and entertainment in the summer. Crowds would gather on the river shore or on pleasure boats to relax and cool off in the evening after a hot and humid summer day. UTAGAWA YOSHIIKU, Also known as Ikkeisai Yoshiiku, Ochiai Yoshiiku, Ikujirô, Chôkarô, Ikkeisai, Keiami, Keisai, Sairakusai, Yoshiiku, Yoshiiku Utagawa. Born the son of teahouse proprietor Asakusa Tamichi in 1833, Yoshiiku became a student of ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi toward the end of the 1840s. His earliest known work dates to 1852 when he provided the backgrounds to some actor prints by his master. Yoshiiku's earliest works were portraits of actors, beauties, and warriors. He later followed Kuniyoshi into making satirical and humorous pieces, and became the leading name in the field after Kuniyosh's death in 1861.

Z. und Kordelbindung sowie hs. Titelschild. Tokio um 1904. -- Bilder aus dem Heldenepos "Taiheiki", der Geschichte der großen Kriege. Es entstand im späten vierzehnten Jahrhundert und berichtet von einer Reihe von Kriegen zwischen dem nördlichen Hofe von Ashikaga Takauji in Kyoto und dem südlichen Hof von Kaiser Go-Daigo in Yoshino. Mehrere japanische Künstler haben sich dieses Themas angenommen, u. a. Utagawa Kuniyoshi, der die wohl wichtigste Folge von Ukiyo-e Holzschnitten um 1848-1849 von Yamamotoya Heikichi verlegen ließ. -- Aber auch Utagawa Yoshiiku nahm sich dem Epos an und schuf unvergleichliche Werke (1833-1904), die hier in einer Ausgabe von 22 Bildern auf semintransparentem Japanpapier vorliegen. Sie zeigen neben Kampfbilder und Samurais auch friedlicher Szenen wie das Kopieren des Epos’ von einer jungen Japanerin, der ihr Sohn aushilft. – Wohlerhalten, frisch.

Edo (Tokio, Hiroko) um 1867. -- Utagawa Yoshiiku (1833-1904) war ein Schüler des großen Kuniyoshi und lebenslanger Rivale von Yoshitoshi, einem seiner Kommilitonen. Nach dem Tod von Kuniyoshi war Yoshiiku mindestens ein Jahrzehnt lang der bedeutendste seiner Schüler, bis andere, insbesondere Yoshitoshi, ihn überstrahlten. Wie so oft neigten die Schüler großer Künstler zur Nachahmung, und Yoshiiku bildet da keine Ausnahme. In seiner Serie der "Heldenbiographien des Taiheiki Eiyuden" von fünfzig Drucken ist der Stil von Kuniyoshi am deutlichsten, nicht nur in der Zeichnung und den Gesten der einzelnen Krieger, sondern auch in den spezifischen Details von Charakter und Ereignis. Kuniyoshi hatte 1849 eine nahezu identische Serie zu diesem Thema produziert. -- Die Serie ist fast die letzte, die im unverwechselbaren Musha-e Stil der Utagawa-Schule produziert wurde. Mit Musha-e werden die Kriegsbilder, Kampfbilder und Kämpferbilder bezeichnet, oftmals martialische Szenen mit gruseligen Details, wie hier z. B. der mit Totenschädeln gezierte Stab des Samurai-Kriegers. – Wie üblich etwas ungenauer, wenig kraftvoller Druck der schwarzen Konturplatte, sonst aber in leichtenden Farben. Hin und wieder nur leichte Gebrauchsspuren.
