Vertical kakemono-e. Signed Ichijusai Yoshikazu ga [painted by Ichijusai Yoshikazu]. Kato Kiyomasa. Kato Kiyomasa is shown in full armor, brandishing his characteristic intensity, with bold heraldic motifs emphasizing his martial authority and commanding presence. SIZE of the sheet 72.5 x 24.7 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and vibrant colors. Some soiling, few stains, creasing, and folds. Tiny tears, small losses and cuts along the edges. Kato Kiyomasa (1562–1611) was one of Japan’s most formidable samurai warlords of the late Sengoku and early Edo periods, renowned for his fierce military discipline, unwavering loyalty to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and prominent role in the Korean campaigns. Celebrated as the “Devil General” for his ferocity in battle, Kiyomasa was also admired for his devout support of Buddhism and his efforts in castle construction, most famously Kumamoto Castle. Utagawa Yoshikazu (active 1848-1870) was a student of Kuniyoshi and an important artist of Yokohama-e genre of woodblock prints which imagined the foreign people, customs, and things that entered Japan following Japanese engagement in trade in 1854. While best known for his Yokohama-e, Yoshikazu also produced a number of historical prints.

The Strongman Saburō Yoshihisa Wrestling with a Bear

publisher: Aritaya SeiemonThis print depicts the legendary strongman Saburō Yoshihisa wrestling a bear and belongs to the early work of Utagawa Yoshikazu, a pupil of Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Unlike his master, Yoshikazu was a rather weak draftsman, his figures often stiff, disproportionate, and awkwardly modeled, reflecting naive attempts at realism. From the late 1840s he tried to emulate Kuniyoshi’s heroes and warriors, though without his dramatic flair or compositional balance — as seen here, where the struggling hero appears static and heavy rather than dynamic. Printed by the small publisher Aritaya Seiemon, the work also reflects lower production quality, with limited color and uneven registration. Nevertheless, it is collectible for its rarity and historical value, marking Yoshikazu’s early phase before he turned to Yokohama-e — scenes of Westerners, ships, trains, and foreign fashions after the opening of Yokohama in 1859. This print thus offers a revealing glimpse into the formative stage of Japan’s first painter of Western-themed subjects, before his later rise as a chronicler of modernization.

UTAGAWA YOSHIKAZU: TRIPTYCH OF THE GREAT BATTLE FROM THE TAIHEIKI Yoshikazu (active 1848-1870), signed Ichijusai Yoshikazu ga Japan, dated 1856 Color woodblock prints on paper. Oban triptych. Signed Ichijusai Yoshikazu ga, censor’s seal: Aratame (Dragon 10); publisher Maruya Jinpachi (Marujin, Enjudo). Title Taiheiki ogassen (A Great Battle from the Taiheiki). Illustrating a battle from The Taiheiki, the famous chronicle of the warring period between the Northern and Southern courts in 14th-century Japan. Here, fighting takes place at a samurai encampment along a river under a driving rain. In the center, a battle-helmeted warrior slashes an enemy's pole arm in two with his sword, the pair glaring fiercely at each other. Another samurai rushes forward at right, gripping his weapon overhead with both hands as he runs. An adversary tumbles onto his back beside him, the ground littered with broken weapons and discarded equipment. Tent walls hang from the trees at right, with a row of banners and standards visible beyond. SIZE ca. 37.4 x 25.3 cm (each sheet) Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, slight fading to colors, and minor foxing. Small losses and cuts along the edges. Col. woodcut from an untitled series of foreigners at home, 34 x 23 cm (oban tate-e), signed Issen Yoshikazu Ga, w. publisher's seal and combined sensor and date seal (1860) in the block. W. num. thin spots and pinholes, remnants of former mount verso, a bit dust-soiled. Still, a very attractive and rare print. W. accompanying signed and stamped certificate of antiquity (using the name Ichikawa Yoshikazu for the artist, dating 1840 AD), issued by Y. Tsuruki & Co. in Kyoto in 1967; the print was purchased by Japan Gasoline Co. for Dr. Richard H. Nagel, w. orig. envelope. (total 3)
