The work is part of the collection by the magician Mr. Cox and depicts in the frame of the topic of the collection ‘Magic in Art’ a wizard presenting a ploy. To do so, he uses two glass bell jars, a chick and a dice on two flying tables. The quote ‘Under the Coat of Reticence’, describes something happening in the unknown. The artist has realised the same motif in a painting. The lithograph on laid paper (die stamp), is signed in pencil on the lower side ‘Reinhard Zado’, titled ‘Unter dem Mantel der Verschwiegenheit’, and numbered ‘15/150’. The print is in very good condition; the frame shows slight traces of wear. The plate dimensions are 58 x 49 cm, the sheet dimensions are 89.5 x 69.8 cm, and the total dimensions are framed 94 x 74 cm. Reinhard Zado (born 1951) The artist Reinhard Zado comes from Much nearby Cologne. After he trained as a typesetter he went to study at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences. A number of exhibitions followed, for example at the Art Association Marburg, the Museum Siegburg and at the Art Association Rotenburg. In 1979, he received the Rhein-Sieg-Krieg advancement award. ‘Magic in Art’ Collection of the Magician Mr. Cox The German magician Mr. Cox (1932-2012) collected a large number artworks of contemporary artists within the scope of the art project ‘Magic in Art’. 'Magic in Art' Collection of the Magician Mr. Cox The German magician Mr. Cox (1932-2012) collected a large number artworks of contemporary artists within the scope of the art project 'Magic in Art'. He had the collection on display at his magic art theatre and magic art museum in Lüneburg (Germany). Mr. Cox, born as Jürgen Wolfram in 1932 in Stettin, started his career as an illusionist in 1958. Shortly thereafter, he abandoned his profession as a detective superintendent. In 1964, he won the first prize of the Grand Prix of the World Championships of Magic, and in 1973, he came second in the world championship in Paris together with his professional and life partner 'Annabelle'. Most of the artists who are represented in the art collection were close friends of Mr. Cox. 'Magic in Art' offers a multi-layered view on the world of the illusionists and magicians. Amongst the artists of the collection are Reinhard Zado, Uwe Bremer, Bruno Bruni, Paul Wunderlich, Simon Dittrich and Toni Llabrés Campins. It depicts a juggler who is performing his trick at a round table in front of a group of people who are curiously observing the outcome. The artist once said about his paintings 'If Cox asked me, what magic I would perform if I could! What a question! Can't he see that I perform magic just like he does, for the eyes, two-dimensional. Unable to touch and realize [...] In the imagination of painters and magicians'. Below is a jester figure playing the bass lute. 'Cagliostro in Vienna' (1875) is an operetta in three acts by Johann Strauss II. The image is composed of dynamic movement with sheets of music flying through the air reflecting the sound of the music. The image was originally part of the collection 'Magic in Art', by the magician Mr. Cox who is known for his legendary performance with a flying, pivoting piano. The painting is signed on the upper left 'Reinhard Zado'. It is in very good condition with minimal traces of wear. The dimensions of the stretcher frame are 200 x 139 cm.
