Published by La Belle Edition, Paris. Zárraga (1886-1946) was a Mexican artist who studied at the at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes, Mexico City, and moved to Paris in 1911. He only returned to Mexico once, at the outbreak of World War II, for a short time. During the 1910s, at the outset of his career in Paris, Zárraga painted in a Cubist style and was also an early influence on the Surrealist movement. Cendrars (1887-1961), who was born in Switzerland and worked most of his career in Paris, was among the leading avant-garde poets of his day and collaborated with numerous notable modern artists to create illustrated works like this, including Marc Chagall, Fernand Léger, and Robert and Sonia Delaunay.

Agradecemos a la Maestra María Luisa Novelo, asesora en la realización del libro Ángel Zárraga, la colección de la CNIC [Cámara Nacional de la Industria de la Construcción], 1994, por la verificación de autenticidad de esta obra, abril del 2018. Procedencia: perteneció a la colección de Don Francisco Zárraga, hermana del artista, México. Presenta detalles de conservación. Desde su juventud conoció a personajes artísticos de la época: fue alumno de Justo Sierra y Amado Nervo, amigo cercano de Jaime Torres Bodet y asistió a clases en la Academia de San Carlos, donde estudió con Julio Ruelas. En el año de 1904 emprendió un viaje a Francia y ahí fue uno de los fundadores de la Escuela de París, al lado de personajes como Braque o Juan Gris, además, entabló amistad con Pablo Picasso y Amadeo Modligliani. En su obra donde puede apreciarse a un gran dibujante, debido a la gama de influencias de vanguardias y características plásticas formales: algunas piezas contienen texturas, especialmente los retratos que nos recuerdan las pinceladas e imágenes de Claude Monet, de la época impresionista, bañados en luz y realizados al aire libre, en contraste con los retratos de infantes realizados al interior del estudio del pintor. Llaman la atención los lienzos abstractos, que funcionan como un estudio de la geometría a partir de la figura humana y objetos cotidianos. Desde otra perspectiva realizó obras de estilo medieval, con composición central, fondos planos y con aspectos alegóricos o religiosos. Fuente consultada: ECHEGARAY, Miguel Ángel et ál. La obra de Ángel Zárraga, en la década de los años 20 y 30, era muy cotizada en París y se exhibía con frecuencia en diversas galerías de arte del país. El estilo cubista con el que había estado trabajando lo rezagaba y regresó a su fuente original de inspiración, así, comenzó a realizar obras que no estaban en las temáticas comunes de un pintor, siendo el deporte el que dominó su imaginario colectivo y la salvación de esta etapa de crisis. En los años previos a los Juegos Olímpicos de 1924 en París inició su interés por los cuerpos atléticos. Fue fanático del futbol, así que retrató a jugadores de equipos franceses y de otros países, ninguno latinoamericano. Con un lenguaje artístico moderno, estas obras acentuaron su conocimiento anatómico, captando con precisión, fuerza y dinamismo el movimiento de los músculos de los jugadores en plena acción; este desarrollo plástico le dio una pauta artística para llegar al muralismo. Pintó tanto hombres como mujeres futbolistas. La primera esposa de Zárraga, Jannette Ivanoff, fue jugadora del equipo de futbol francés, lo que lo inspiró a pintarla varias veces; la retrató en plena acción en el cuadro "Las futbolistas" y a Angelina Beloff en la obra "Futbolista rubia" sosteniendo un balón.
