Artist: Felix Francois Georges Philbert Ziem (1821-1911)  Signed "Ziem" lower right.  Description per Appraisal: Standing figure of a conquistador.  Provenance: Purchased and appraised by Schweitzer Gallery in 1989.    Image: 18" x 7"  Frame: 25" x 14"    Condition: The painting is in good condition. Wear and age to the frame.      Artist Bio: Félix Ziem (1821–1911) was a French Orientalist and Barbizon-circle painter, born in Beaune and originally trained as an architectural draftsman in Dijon before turning to painting in his twenties. Felix Ziem, View of the Bacino di San Marco at night

    Est: €10,000 - €15,000

Signed lower right: Ziem Certificate Association Felix Ziem, Marseille, 2026. This painting depicts a popular motif by Felix Ziem: a view of the Bacino di San Marco – this time at night. Characteristic of Ziem’s style is his sketchy, almost impressionistic brushwork, which prioritises atmospheric effects over topographical accuracy and places the water, as a reflective surface, at the centre of the composition. We would like to thank the Association Felix Ziem, Marseille, for confirming the authenticity of the work on the basis of a digital photograph.

    Est: $8,000 - $10,000

Felix Francois Georges Philibert Ziem (1821-1911) Signed Lower Left measures 23" x 28" oil on canvas in a 28.25" x 35" frame About the artist: "Born in 1821 in Beaune to a Croatian father and French mother, Ziem initially studied architecture in Dijon. Having a boisterous character, he was expelled in 1838 for unruly behavior. In 1839 he left for Marseille, where he was the Clerk of Works on the construction of the Marseille Canal. That same year, Ferdinand Philippe, the Duc d'Orleans, noticed Ziem's watercolors. The duke purchased two and commissioned the artist for a further six. This event began Ziem's career as a professional artist." Biography from Schiller & Bodo European Paintings As an artist, Ziem became an avid traveler in search of beautiful subjects, favoring areas with unique atmospheric qualities. He owned homes in Venice, the Martiques, Nice and Paris. In 1844 he traveled to Greece, Turkey and Russia, and would later travel through Belgium, Holland, England, Egypt, Hungary and Algeria. Throughout his career, Ziem was also an active exhibitor in the Paris Salons, beginning in 1849.

Félix ZIEM (Beaune 1821 - Paris 1911) View of the Orient Oil on panel, one board, not parqueted 35 x 46 cm Signed lower right Ziem Our painting can be compared with "La tour de Léandre Constantinople" exhibited at the centennale de l'Art Français, Paris 1900, no. 72, and reproduced in Anne Burdin- Hellebrandt, Félix Ziem, tome II; no. 1543, page 240. It was in 1856 that painter Felix Ziem first traveled to the Orient, from Constantinople to Greece via Lebanon. It was a journey from which he brought back numerous drawings and sketches, which he later used to create a multitude of paintings in his studio. Ziem set himself apart from other Orientalist painters of his time, thanks to a unique style of rendering light variations that lent a vaporous atmosphere to his paintings and a particular poetry.
