(Masi 1854–1929 San Remo) A boat trip on the Göksu River, signed F. Zonaro, oil on canvas on panel, 60 x 45 cm, oval, framed Provenance: European Private Collection. Catalogued and illustrated in: Erol Makzume, The Sultan‘s Italian Court Painter Fausto Zonaro, Florence 2021, p. 138. We are grateful to Erol Makzume for kindly confirming the authenticity on the basis of the original. Born in Padua, Fausto Zonaro moved to Constantinople in 1890 with his future wife Elisa, where he became deeply absorbed by the city’s atmosphere and the daily life of its inhabitants. He soon attracted the attention of Abdülhamid II, who appointed him Painter to the Imperial Court. In this capacity, Zonaro gained insight into various strata of Ottoman society and was also active as a teacher at the School of Fine Arts founded by Osman Hamdy Bey. Celebrated as a painter of modern Turkish life, he produced numerous views of the Bosphorus and its surroundings. Although he left Constantinople in 1911 following the political changes that led to the expulsion of Italians, the city remained a lifelong source of inspiration. The present painting brings together two characteristic aspects of Zonaro’s oeuvre: the poetic landscape of the “Sweet Waters of Asia” along the Göksu River and the idealized figure of an odalisque, a woman serving in the Ottoman harem. Seated in a boat upon the softly shimmering water, the young woman gazes softly at the viewer, her head slightly tilted. The loosely draped, nearly transparent veil falling over her shoulder enhances the intimate atmosphere of the composition. The warm tonality, typical of certain hours of the day in Constantinople, bathes the scene in a refined light much appreciated by Zonaro’s Western clientele. The present painting clearly follows the conventions of late nineteenth-century European Orientalism. The odalisque should be understood less as a historically precise representation than as an idealized embodiment reflecting the aesthetic preferences of the time. Although Zonaro served as court painter to Sultan Abdülhamid II, there is no evidence that he himself had direct access to the harem. Notably, however, letters from his sister Leonia record that she and Zonaro’s wife Elisa attended a diplomatic reception in the harem and met with a wife of the Grand Vizier (see Erol Makzume, 2021, pp. 218–219). These impressions, conveyed through his close circle, may also have enriched the present composition and thus combining observation, imagination, and established Orientalist pictorial conventions.

ZONARO FAUSTO (1854-1929) Fausto Zonaro (Masi, 1854 - Sanremo, 1929) Lezione della sera olio su tela firmato in basso a destra: F. Zonaro cm. 65,5x99,5 Al retro: etichetta della Galleria Bottega d'Arte, Livorno Autentica del prof. Cesare Mario Trevigne.

    ZONARO FAUSTO

    Est: €200,000 - €300,000

ZONARO FAUSTO (1854-1929) Fausto Zonaro (Masi 1854 - Sanremo 1929) Sulle Acque Dolci d'Asia olio su tela firmato in basso a destra: F. Zonaro cm. 80x124 5 Autentica del prof. Cesare Mario Trevigne.

FAUSTO ZONARO (ITALIAN 1854-1929) VIEW ON THE SEA OVERLOOKING CONSTANTINOPLE, OIL ON BOARD

    Est: £4,000 - £6,000

FAUSTO ZONARO (ITALIAN, 1854–1929), "UN CAÏQUE SUR LE BOSPHORE – AU FOND SAINTE-SOPHIE", OIL ON BOARD Constantinople (Istanbul), late 19th to early 20th century Description: Oil on board, signed lower right “Zonaro” and inscribed on the reverse in the artist’s hand: “Un Caïque sur le Bosphore – au fond Sainte-Sophie – par Zonaro.” This vibrant composition captures an Ottoman rowing boat (caïque) gliding across the Bosphorus, set against the iconic silhouette of the Hagia Sophia. The painting is infused with bold impasto and shimmering reflections, characteristic of Zonaro’s impressionistic technique. The figures, clad in red fezzes and white garments, row in rhythmic unison across turquoise waters under a rose-tinted sky. Rendered with Zonaro’s signature fluency and colouristic vibrancy, the scene evokes both daily life and imperial pageantry along the Bosphorus, themes central to his celebrated Ottoman oeuvre. Board dimensions: approx. 27x 19.5 cm Unframed Comparable examples: Fausto Zonaro, “Rowers on the Golden Horn,” oil on board, sold at Bonhams, London, Orientalist Art, 25 October 2021, Lot 51, for £27,500. Fausto Zonaro, “Ottoman Procession on the Bosphorus,” sold at Christie’s, Dubai, Middle Eastern Modern & Contemporary Art, 23 March 2017, Lot 3, for $56,250. Fausto Zonaro, “Sunset on the Bosphorus,” oil on canvas, sold at Sotheby’s, London, 19th Century European Paintings, 11 December 2013, Lot 77, for £38,500. Note: This charming and atmospheric view reflects Zonaro’s keen sensitivity to Ottoman light, ceremonial movement, and the interplay of architecture and sea. The handwritten title and artist’s name on the reverse confirm authenticity and lend additional historic value, indicating this was likely retained in the artist’s studio or given directly to a collector.

    May. 06, 2025

FAUSTO ZONARO (ITALIAN 1854-1929) VIEW ON THE SEA OVERLOOKING CONSTANTINOPLE, OIL ON CANVAS

    Est: £10,000 - £15,000

FAUSTO ZONARO (ITALIAN, 1854–1929), VIEW ON THE SEA OVERLOOKING CONSTANTINOPLE, OIL ON CANVAS Constantinople (Istanbul), late 19th to early 20th century Description: Oil on canvas, signed lower left "F. Zonaro." A vibrant, impressionistic view of Constantinople from the water, capturing the interplay of light on the Bosphorus with striking colouristic sensitivity. The scene features a domed mosque with twin minarets—possibly the Yeni Cami or another prominent waterfront mosque—against a glowing sky with expressive clouds and sailboats gliding on calm waters. The palette is suffused with warm pinks, purples, and turquoise hues, evoking the romance and vibrancy of the late Ottoman capital at sunset. Fausto Zonaro, court painter to Sultan Abdulhamid II, was one of the most celebrated Western artists to work in the Ottoman Empire. His works captured both grand historical subjects and intimate urban views with equal mastery. This smaller-scale composition is typical of his plein-air-inspired studies, likely painted during his prolific period in Istanbul between 1891 and 1910. Comparable examples: Fausto Zonaro, “View of the Golden Horn,” sold at Sotheby’s, London, 19th Century European Paintings, 30 April 2015, Lot 34, for £62,500. Fausto Zonaro, “Evening on the Bosphorus,” oil on canvas, sold at Christie’s, Dubai, Middle Eastern Modern & Contemporary Art, 18 March 2019, Lot 34, for $87,500. Fausto Zonaro, “Galata Bridge,” signed oil on canvas, sold at Bonhams, London, Orientalist Art, 24 October 2022, Lot 18, for £55,000. Note: Zonaro’s paintings remain highly sought after for their unique position at the crossroads of Orientalist art and direct court patronage. This work is particularly notable for its intimacy and jewel-like scale, suggesting it may have been created as a gift or study for a larger composition. The original carved and gilded frame enhances its display value. Length x Width including frame: 53 x 34.5cm Canvas length x width: 34 x 16cm

(Masi 1854–1929 San Remo) An Odalisque Playing the Lute on the Bosporus, signed F. Zonaro, oil on canvas, 85 x 64 cm, framed Provenance: Private Collection, Italy. Catalogued and illustrated in: Erol Makzume, The Sultan’s Italian Court Painter Fausto Zonaro, Florence 2021, ill. p. 137. We are grateful to Erol Makzume for kindly confirming the authenticity on the basis of the original. Fausto Zonaro moved to Istanbul in 1891 and was appointed the official painter to the court of Sultan Abdul Hamid II in 1896. He produced of number of works depicting the everyday life of the Ottoman capital, and the daily activities and traditions of the Turkish people. Executed en plein-air, the present painting depicts a young, well-dressed Turkish woman playing the lute on a small boat on the Bosphorus in Istanbul. The city is visible in the background. She is playing the baĝlama or saz which is a stringed instrument belonging to the family of long-necked lutes used in Ottoman classical music. She plays using the fingerpicking technique known as şelpe. It is likely that the sitter is an Odalisque. The term derives from the Turkish word for chambermaid or attendant, and it is used to identify an Ottoman harem girl. Zonaro left Istanbul in 1910 when the new government of the “Young Turks” dismissed him from the post of painter to the Sultan. He eventually settled in San Remo until his death in 1929. He is considered the most important painter to introduce a western style of painting to Turkey.
