William Zorach Sold at Auction Prices

Sculptor, Painter, Commercial artist, Lithographer, Wood Sculptor, Stone sculptor, Water color painter, b. 1887 - d. 1966

(b Eurburg, Lithuania, 1887; d Bath, Maine, 1966) American sculptor and painter. William Zorach worked in many media including oil, watercolor, engraving and lithography, but he is best known for his sculptures. Zorach’s family immigrated to the United States from Lithuania in 1891. They settled in Cleveland, Ohio where he began his study of painting at the Cleveland Institute of Art. He went on to study at the National Academy of Design in New York before spending two years in Paris where he met his future wife, the painter Marguerite Thompson. Upon his return to the states Zorach settled in New York. He became successful as a painter, painting abstract, cubist compositions. In 1917 however he began to take an interest in sculpture. With no formal training in the discipline, he sculpted figural pieces from wood, stone and cast bronze, which drew inspiration from ancient Egyptian, Greek, Asian and African sculpture as well as from the works of European modernists like Brancusi.

              WILLIAM ZORACH Mountain Stream.

              Est: $3,000 - $5,000

WILLIAM ZORACH Mountain Stream. Linoleum cut on Japan paper, 1914-16. 274x356 mm; 10 3/4x14 inches, full margins. Signed in pencil, lower right. A superb impression of this very scarce modernist print. Zorach (1887-1966) completed the majority of his printed œuvre from 1914 to the early 1920s, most reflecting his love of nature or his transcendentalist philosophy (other prints served as announcements or greeting cards). He was often inspired by his summer retreats away from New York. In 1913 and 1914, Zorach and his wife, artist Marguerite, spent their summer in Chappaqua, New York. Their summer destinations also included Randolph, New Hampshire; Echo Farm, Plainfield, New Hampshire; Provincetown, Massachusetts; Stonington, Maine; and the island of Robinhood, Maine. The current work is imbued with Zorach's love of the outdoors. Here, six figures appear in harmony with the wilderness, recalling Zorach's words about his summer in Chappaqua, "The country was a new world to me—every flower and every weed was a revelation of color and design. The richness of invention in nature was unbelievable . . . Flowers bloomed, wildlife carried on, clouds floated, trees designed themselves in the landscapes. Nude figures lay around pools, played with children, made love, dreamed."

              WILLIAM ZORACH Sunrise.

              Est: $2,000 - $3,000

WILLIAM ZORACH Sunrise. Linoleum cut, circa 1916. 295x220 mm; 11 5/8x8 5/8 inches, full margins. Signed in pencil, lower right. A very good impression. The richness of invention in nature was unbelievable...Flowers bloomed, wildlife carried on, clouds floated, trees designed themselves in the landscapes. Nude figures lay around pools, played with children, made love, dreamed."

Provenance: Estate of the artist; private collection, New York. Aside from this bronze edition, Zorach (1887-1966) also carved a version of Frog out of green marble. In his 1961 book Zorach Explains Sculpture, What it Means and How it is Made, Zorach recalls after he found the green stone, "Now I didn't know very much about a frog. I caught one and put it in a glass bowl. Then I made many drawings and studies of it so that when I came to carve the stone, I knew what a frog was really like, what forms were in its body, how these forms were related, how it moved and functioned . . . I use my imagination and my knowledge to create an idea or impression of the animal. I take whatever liberties seem right to produce a work of art. It is important to see the big simple design of the work from every angle."

Signed William Zorach, 'New England Landscape View'. Original Watercolor painting on Paper Signed Zorach and attributed to William Zorach (Lithuanian/American, 1887 - 1966). 'New England Landscape View'. Original watercolor painting on paper, circa 1920's. Signed lower right, 'Zorach'. William Zorach is known for abstract sculpture, modernist landscape and figure painting. While in Paris he was greatly influenced by the cubist and fauvist movements  there and had several paintings exhibited at the salon d'automme.  This influence and subsequent success fueled his career back in the states where he was honored with his first one-man exhibition. After meeting his future wife, noted artist Marguerite Zorach in paris, he established a studio in new york and shortly after they were married. The couple immediately began to collaborate artistically. Both entered artwork in the 1913 armory show. Their success continued as both were invited to participate in the 1916 forum exhibition of modern american painters. Both William and Marguerite were heavily influenced by cubism and fauvism and they are credited as being among the premiere artists to introduce european modernist styles to american modernism.  Zorach frequently displayed his paintings in gallery shows in venues such as the society of independent artists and the whitney studio club. While Marguerite began to experiment with textiles and created large, fine art tapestries and hooked rugs, William began to experiment with sculpture, which would become his primary medium. In 1923 the couple moved to maine, which allowed them to explore and depict the region. William Zorachs works can be found in numerous private, corporate, and public collections including the smithsonian american art museum, the museum of fine arts, boston, the metropolitan museum of art, the whitney museum of art, the currier museum of art, among others.
