Larry Zox (American, 1936-2006), Diagonal III

          Est: $6,000 - $10,000

Larry Zox (American, 1936-2006), Diagonal III Acrylic on canvas. Executed in 1966. 60 x 70 in. (152.4 x 177.8cm) Provenance Kornblee Gallery, New York, New York. "20th Century Furniture & Decorative Arts," Butterfields, Los Angeles, California, September 29, 2002, lot 4449. Private Collection, Pennsylvania. Exhibition "First India Triennale, New Delhi" International Art Program, National Collection of Fine Arts, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., 1968, exh. cat., cat. no. 20. Lot essay In Diagonal III, Larry Zox explores the interplay of color, shape, and line to create a visually dynamic and rhythmical composition. The painting is characterized by bold, diagonal lines that intersect and overlap, creating a sense of movement and optical illusion. It demonstrates his mastery in the realm of optical art, where the viewer's perception is challenged and intrigued by the interplay of geometric elements and color. This painting is a testament to Zox's ability to engage viewers with the vibrancy and complexity of his abstract works. Diagonal III was included in the first India Triennale of Contemporary Art in New Delhi in 1968, administered by the International Art Program, National Collection of Fine Arts, at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. Renowned art historian, curator and art critic Ellen H. Johnson was selected as the commissioner for the United States contingent. Johnson was instrumental in promoting some of the leading artists of the time, and included in the exhibition works by Contemporary artists Donald Judd, Joseph Cornell, Larry Poons, Georgia O’Keeffe, Jackson Pollock, Robert Morris and Claes Oldenburg, along with Larry Zox.
