In 1908, he participated in the art exhibition organized by Gustav Klimt and Josef Hoffmann and, commissioned by Hoffmann, designed wallpaper patterns for a children's room in the Palais Stoclet in Brussels, which brought him into contact with the Wiener Werkstätte at an early age. From 1909, he lived in Haugsdorf with his mother and sister; after military service (1915–1919) and his return from Italian captivity, he taught at the Schleiß ceramic workshops in Gmunden from 1920 to 1922 and, from 1922 onward, commuted between Vienna and Upper Austria. His decorative arts work encompassed illustrations for the Wiener Werkstätte, children's books, posters, calendar graphics, murals, wallpapers, carpets, and fabrics; in addition, he produced prints, watercolors, drawings, and oil paintings of landscapes, still lifes, rural and religious motifs, society portraits, and fairytale and fantastical scenes. Stylistically, he was influenced by Art Nouveau, folk art, Symbolism, Expressionism, New Objectivity, and Realism, with flat ornamentation, decorative lines, and a synthesis of ornamental elegance and expressive vitality—comparable to the work of Koloman Moser, Dagobert Peche, Bertold Löffler, Eduard Josef Wimmer-Wisgrill, Mela Köhler, Richard Gerstl, Broncia Koller-Pinell, Franz Barwig the Elder, Anton Hanak, Dorit Margreiter, Max Kurzweil, Christian Griepenkerl, Anton Faistauer, Rudolf Bacher, and Ludwig Heinrich Jungnickel. During the interwar period, he belonged to the Zinkenbach artists' colony on Lake Wolfgang, where he collaborated with Ferdinand Kitt, Josef Dobrowsky, Ernst Huber, Oskar Laske, Georg Merkel, Louise Merkel-Romee, Georg Ehrlich, Anton Mahringer, and other landscape painters whose focus on landscape and figurative painting he shared. After being banned from painting in 1942, he became a member of the Vienna Secession, the Vienna Künstlerhaus, and the Linz artists' association MAERZ in 1945; from 1949 he taught at the Linz School of Applied Arts (now the University of Applied Arts), and from 1955 he was president of the Mühlviertel Artists' Guild. His oeuvre combines the ornamental flatness of Art Nouveau with the expressive power of Expressionism and the objective precision of New Objectivity, as echoed in the works of Carl Moll, Oskar Kokoschka and Albin Egger-Lienz, resulting in a unique synthesis of decorative art, landscape painting and imaginative imagery. From an early age, Zülow experimented intensively with graphic techniques and in 1907 developed, among other things, the paper cutting stencil technique, which he also patented. From 1908 on, he was a member of the Klimt Group. In 1909 he moved to Haugsdorf, where his mother and sister lived. In 1912, a scholarship enabled him to undertake an extensive study trip through Western Europe. From 1915 to 1919 he did military service and was taken prisoner by the Italians. Between 1920 and 1922 he worked as a teacher at the Schleiss ceramic workshops in Gmunden. From 1922 he lived alternately in Vienna and Upper Austria and undertook several trips abroad. His decorative arts and illustrative works, which were often created for the Wiener Werkstätte, were characterized by the decorative verve of the Secession. From the 1920s he created the first oil paintings, which, like his paste-the-wall paintings and watercolors, mainly show landscapes. In the years between 1928 and 1935 he was awarded the Austrian State Prize several times, and in 1942 he was forbidden to paint by the Nazi regime. From 1933 to 1939 and from 1945 on, he belonged to the Vienna Secession and was also a member of the Linz Artists' Association Maerz. From 1949 he taught at the School of Applied Arts in Linz and from 1955 he was President of the Mühlviertler Artists' Guild. During this period he received numerous public commissions for murals and mosaics. The Hauptallee is an avenue in the Prater in Vienna's 2nd District. It is popularly called "Prater-Hauptallee." The Hauptallee plays a key role in Heimito von Doderer's novel "Die Wasserfälle von Slunj" (The Waterfalls of Slunj) (1963).
