We are a relatively new auction house and held our first Sale in October 2001. The company is owned and run by David Brettell who previously managed Salerooms in Glastonbury, Somerset and Market Drayton in Shropshire and he is now established as a leading auctioneer in the livestock, agricultural and fine arts fields.
The Saleroom is located at 58 High Street, Newport but accesses directly on to the main Town centre car park so deliveries and sale day parking are never a problem. The new portal and pillared façade frontage provides an impressive entrance to the 4000 sq ft of display space which allows the furniture and effects to be laid out uncluttered for a detailed view. Internally, the selected items for the Antique and Fine Art sales held every two months have their own designated room set display area.
Each Tuesday Brettells hold their weekly General sales of approximately 400 lots of Victorian, Edwardian and later Furniture, China, Glass, Pictures and Prints, Metal ware, Electrical Goods as well as just a few special Collectable and Antique items to tempt the more specialist buyer. More and more people discover the Saleroom each week, either as buyers or sellers and find that buying or selling by Auction can be an exciting and novel experience but some can be daunted, especially on their first visit.
Certainly a visit to the Saleroom is an experience in itself, the atmosphere is friendly and lively and the many and varied lots are well laid out for pre inspection on the viewing days of Saturday from 9.00 a.m. until 12.00 noon and Monday from 9.00 a.m. until 6.00p.m.
The Auction Sale itself is held each and every Tuesday starting at 10.00 a.m. with the China, Glass, Metal ware and Pictures. At 11.30 a.m. attention moves to the Outside Effects, Garden Equipment and Electrical Items and at 12.30 p.m. the sale of Furniture commences.
The fixed sale times are a blessing, allowing the prospective purchaser to know more or less at what precise time any particular lot is to be offered for sale. The buyer registers their details on arrival at the Saleroom and is given their own unique bidding number card, which is used once the lot is purchased.
As House Clearances arrive at the saleroom, the most interesting antiques and collectables are put to one side to form the basis of the catalogued Antique and Fine Art sales which are held every two months and details of these sales can be found on this site.
Certainly buying by Auction is an exciting and unforgettable experience. Auctioneer David Brettell is fast paced and entertaining all at the same time, selling over 100 lots per hour - so you must have your wits about you. He will give a brief description of the lot, its number and invite bids. But it is not just that, there is plenty of interaction in the Saleroom and lots of jokes too - it is an entertainment in itself. His job as Auctioneer is to tempt you to keep bidding just that little bit more so it is important that you have viewed the items properly and that you fix an upper price in your mind and keep to that limit. It is easy to get carried away in all the excitement, but Brettells do actively encourage new Auction Buyers and of course they want to see them back week after week, so David is helpful and quick to settle "first time" nerves!
For those unable to attend the Sale, Brettells do also offer the option
of Commission Bids which allow you to leave a maximum price on your chosen
lots, up to which the Auctioneer will bid on your behalf. Brettells are
also happy to deal with telephone bids if you prefer.
