Marsyas should have considered this line taken from the 'Gesta Romanorum' before he challenged Apollo to a contest of music and lost his hide and life. In his painting 'Marsyas challenging Apollo', the important German-Italian painter Johan Karl Loth (1632-1698) offers his view of the forthcoming death of Marsyas in a pictorial composition dexterously combining the different stages of the drama (Reserve price: € 6,500).
