‘ATTEMPTED MURDER OF PRESIDENT GARFIELD'
A single page from ‘The Illustrated London News', 2pp. 11.5 x 16 in., dated July 9, 1881, featuring a near full page engraving of Garfield on the front. The article ‘Attempted Murder of President Garfield', reads in part: ‘...The atrocious attempt, on Saturday morning, at Washington, to assassinate General Garfield, the President of the United States, has excited throughout Europe almost as great horror and indignation as the murder of the Emperor Alexander II...Garfield is dangerously wounded, but there are good hopes of his recovery...Garfield...is a man of the type of Abraham Lincoln...of the power of diligence, integrity, fidelity to honest purposes, with natural ability improved by determined self-education...'. Lightly soiled with two minor tears to the right edge, else very good.

Terms and Conditions of Sale
1. This auction is conducted under the laws of the State of Maryland.

2. This is a live auction.

3. A buyer's premium of 20% will be added to the final hammer price of each lot purchased directly through Greenwich Luxury Auctions and a buyer's premium of 25% will be added to lots sold through any other third-party bidding platform, i.e. Invaluable, Liveauctioneers, Auctionzip, etc.

4. The Auctioneer reserves the right to reject any bid for any reason. In exceptional cases of clerking errors, third-party bidding platform errors, miscommunication, or other errors beyond the direct control of the auctioneer, the auctioneer reserves the right to withdraw the lot after the hammer has fallen but only before any payment has been accepted.

5. The Auctioneer reserves the right to withdraw any lot for any reason at any time.

6. In the event of duplicate high bids, the earliest bid received will be the winner.

7. Some lots may carry a reserve beneath which the item will not be sold. Any reserve will always be at or below the low estimate. Reserves and maximum bids will not be disclosed.

8. Every item in this sale has been carefully examined for authenticity by our staff and our retained expert with over twenty years' experience in authentication and sale of Hermes bags and accessories. We strongly encourage in-person inspection of items by potential bidders as well. Descriptions regarding condition are for guidance only and do not constitute a representation or warranty by Greenwich Luxury Auctions. All lots offered as being sold with an original Hermes store receipt are sold AS IS except when the condition of the item varies appreciably from that depicted in the item description. Lots sold without such receipts are sold with a guarantee of authenticity valid for four (4) days from buyer's receipt of purchase.

9. ANY ITEM RETURNED FOR ANY REASON REQUIRES ADVANCE APPROVAL BY THE AUCTIONEER. ALL ITEMS RETURNED MUST BE IN THE SAME CONDITION AS WHEN SHIPPED TO PURCHASER. AUCTIONEER WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR RETURN SHIPPING COSTS, AFTER-AUCTION APPRAISAL AUTHENTICATION AND/OR TESTING FEES, OR ANY OTHER POST-AUCTION COSTS BEYOND THE SALE PRICE OF THE ITEM. ANY CLAIM FOR LACK OF AUTHENTICITY MUST BE SUPPORTED BY A WRITTEN DECLARATION WITH PHOTOGRAPHS FROM TWO (2) EXPERTS ACCEPTABLE TO AUCTIONEER. ALL BAGS ARE UNIQUELY TAGGED - UNDER NO CONDITION WILL A BAG BE ACCEPTED FOR RETURN IF SUCH TAG IS ALTERED, MUTILATED, OR REMOVED. Under no circumstances will the auctioneer be responsible for lost profits or other financial damages.

10. Any lot containing 5 or more items is not subject to return for any reason.

11. Greenwich Luxury Auctions will in no way be responsible for any pre-existing hidden damage or defect, nor defect inherent in the material of the object(s) sold.

12. Illustrations of lots in this catalog and our website may have had size, color, brightness and contrast modifications for display purposes only. Any defects or damage to any items have NOT been altered or corrected in images in any way.

13. Estimated selling prices are for your guidance only. Actual selling prices may be higher or lower than the estimate indicated.

14. The placing of a bid legally binds the bidder to purchase the lot at or below the bid placed, plus buyer's premium (see item 3). Bids may not be retracted without our approval: those doing so will be banned from future participation and will be reported to the trade. Please think before you bid! You are legally bound once you do so.

15. Absentee Bidding. All bidding is undertaken in a competitive manner. The winning bid will always be one bidding increment over the second highest bid. The minimum acceptable bid for any lot is one-half of the low estimate given in the item description. Bidders may call us at 203-361-3862 during office hours, Monday through Friday 10 A.M. - 5:30 P.M. EST. Live bidding: Bids entered during the course of the sale by bidders on the floor, on the phone, or live on the internet will be taken at the amount bid.

16. Payment is expected immediately upon, (but not before) receipt of invoice. We accept cash, business and personal checks, cashier's checks, money orders, and bank transfers. All accounts are payable to Greenwich Luxury Auctions. Payment must be made in U.S. funds. Wire transfer details are available upon request. Please note that lots purchased are subject to sales taxes where applicable unless a resale number is filed with us prior to the auction. Invoices not paid within thirty days of the date of invoice will incur a 1.5% per month late payment fee.

18. Any property made of or incorporating endangered or protected species may have import and export restrictions established by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). These items may have international and/or domestic shipping restrictions. By placing a bid the bidder acknowledges that he is aware of these restrictions and accepts full responsibility in obtaining any license(s) or permit(s) required for delivery of the product. Greenwich Luxury Auctions does not accept liability for purchaser's failure to exercise due diligence in researching lots and obtaining necessary documentation. Some items may be described as being sold with a "CITES CERTIFICATE" It is the buyer's responsibility to ascertain whether such certification is sufficient for lawful shipping from Auctioneer to buyer or his agent.

19. Descriptions may indicate that certain fittings are "gold" or "silver". These terms refer to the metal color of the hardware, rather than implying that the actual composition of the fittings is that of a precious metal. Unless there is specific mention as to carat weight or precious metal weight of these fittings, all descriptions incorporating the terms "gold" or "silver" are descriptive of color of the hardware only.

20. Property purchased and paid for by successful bidders but remaining unclaimed after 120 days will be deemed abandoned and title will be ceded to Greenwich Luxury Auctions LLC.

21. The placing of a bid shall constitute acceptance of the preceding terms and conditions of sale as well as the Bidding Procedure guidelines posted on line and in this catalog. Please note that by submitting a bid in this auction you agree to all the Terms and Conditions of Sale as stated in this catalog or website.

Buyer's Premium
