More About this Item

Description

Flanders Flandria Zeelandia c.1640 Belgium & Holland engraved hand colour map Flandria et Zelandia Comitatus [Flanders and Zeelandia County] Issued c.1640, by Matthäus Merian der Ältere (or "Matthew", "the Elder", or "Sr."; 1593 – 1650) | Approx. Size: The sheet measures 13"H x 14 3/4"W; Engraved area measures 10"H x 13 1/4"H | A Fine mid-17th Century engraved map with lovely hand colour. Decorative quality map with two beautiful coats of arms representing the region of Flanders, under Spanish dominion at the time. The map shows the region in great detail with numerous rivers, topographical names, mountains and cities. Beautiful cartouche at the bottom left and a nice little compass at the top. The county of Flanders was inherited by Charles V of Spain from the burgundian line of his father, Philip the Handsome, in 1516. Charles would then become Emperor, ruling most of Europe including Spain, the Duchy of Milan, the kingdom of Naples and Sicily, the Holy Roman Empire, Burgundy, the Franche Comte, Flanders and Holland. Upon his death the County of Flanders, along with the rest of the Netherlands, was inherited by his son Philip II. By the time this map was issued, around 1640, the Netherlands had become independent and although Flanders remained a part of the Spanish Empire, it suffered several wars and invasions - namely by France - until it was ceded to the Austrian Habsburgs as part of the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. Beautiful example in very good condition.

There are absolutely no warranties or representations of merchantability, of fitness, nor of any other kind, express or implied. All items are available for your examination prior to bidding. Your bidding will signify that you have examined the items as fully as desired, or that you have chosen not to examine them. Any condition statement, written or verbal, is given as a courtesy to the client, and is only an opinion. It should not be treated as a statement of fact. Written and oral descriptions are our opinions and should in no way be construed as a guarantee of any kind as to age, condition, materials or any other feature of items being sold. These estimates are neither a representation nor a prediction of the actual selling price that will be realized at auction. All sales are final. No statement written or oral made by the auctioneer or a representative of Worthington shall be deemed a warranty or assumption of liability by Worthington or by any seller represented by Worthington.

Worthington reserves the right to withdraw any lot, item or property any time including before the auction or sale. All bidders, buyers and winning bidders understand and agree that any bid placed on or before an auction shall be deemed an admission by such bidder, buyer or winning bidder that he/she/it has fully investigated, inspected, and reviewed the item or lot to their full satisfaction, and have determined that the lot or item is as described and has a value or worth equal to or greater than the winning bid on such item or lot.

Your bid is a contract: In bidding on any lot offered, the bidder indicates acceptance of these Terms and Conditions of Sale. Title of each lot passes when the auctioneer says, "Sold". The bidder is responsible for knowing on which item(s) he or she is bidding. If unsure, the bidder should inquire, or not bid. When becoming the winning bidder at auction, you have affected a contract and will be expected to pay for items in which you were evidenced to be the successful bidder. After the item is sold, any loss by fire, theft, breakage, or any other cause is the sole responsibility of the purchaser. Merchandise must be packed and transported by the purchaser at his/her/its own risk and expense.
