Item Overview

Description

**Originally Listed At $600**

Thomas Creswick (British, 1811-1869). "A Cascade" - oil on panel, ca. 1850s to 1860s. Signed "T. Creswick" at lower right. A beautiful landscape painting titled "A Cascade" by 19th C. British artist Thomas Creswick. In this painting, a lone figure stands upon a boulder while fishing in a river, surrounded by leafy trees along the riverbank, with a sublime waterfall - presumably the inspiration for the title "A Cascade" - in the distance. Creswick was among the best known of the Birmingham School of landscapists and was elected a Royal Academician on February 10, 1851. He painted outdoors from nature and especially enjoyed depicting locales with streams and rivers throughout the British Isles. John Ruskin applauded Creswick's observations from nature and rendering of foliage in the first volume of "Modern Painters" (1843). A stunning painting by Royal Academician Thomas Creswick mounted in a custom frame with the title and artist engraved on molding below the painting. Size (painting): 8" L x 6" W (20.3 cm x 15.2 cm) Size (frame): 15.5" L x 13.75" W (39.4 cm x 34.9 cm)

More about the artist: Thomas Creswick studied under Joseph V. Barber in Birmingham and moved to London in 1828. In addition to being one of the leading Birmingham School of Artists, Cheswick was a founding member of the Etching Club. During his lifetime, he exhibited his paintings at the Royal Academy and Suffolk Street Galleries in London. Creswick's work is held in many British art institutions as well as the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven, Connecticut.

Condition Report

Painting is signed "T. Creswick" at lower right. Inner molding/mat of frame is inscribed "A CASCADE / b. 1811 T. CRESWICK, R.A. - d. 1869". Painting is mounted behind glass in a custom frame. Artwork has not been examined outside the frame. One can see craquelure through the glass but the imagery of the composition is still strong. Verso of painting presents with 2 old exhibition labels - one with name of artist, title, medium, and brief artist biography - the other with name of artist, title, and inscription that reads in part "from collection of EW". Frame presents with surface wear, cracks, and losses as shown. Wood on verso of frame has darkened and presents with old nail holes, chips/abrasions commensurate with age, and an inscription that reads "496 5/7" in black ink on upper left stretcher. Frame is fit with old suspension wire which we would recommend replacing.
