Description: “The First Team”. James Naismith invented a game he called “basket ball on December 21, 1891, at the Springfield YMCA. Naismith and the “First Team” laid the groundwork for what was to become the fastest growing game in sports history. The first game was played to a 1-0 score and included nine players to a side. In 1959, the nineteen individuals who were “The First Team” were inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame. Two first day of issue postal covers with the Naismith commemorative and cachet, cancelled in Springfield on November 6, 1961 each signed by “The First Team” members: Ernest G. Hildner (1873-1968) and Raymond P. Kaighn (1869-1962). The covers have been encased.
