More About this Item

Description: 2 soldiers letters home from George Gulick, a private in the 30th NJ, Co. K. He was mustered in on August 17, 1862 and died of typhoid fever at Belle Plains, Va on March 6, 1863. The first letter is dated December 18, 1862 from Aquia Creek and he states they have been on the move for a long time now, long hard marches from Washington through Maryland and they barely gave the soldiers anything to eat. On the last day of the march the men went 24 hours marching with no food. Now they are in Aquia Creek and they only give them 8 hard crackers, a little salt pork and a little shelter tent and that is all. He spends his time loading boats and cars and items that Burnside used at Fredericksburg. He helped guard about 200 prisoners and last night he helped carry 400 wounded men from the cars to the boat and he was almost sick to see them wounded in the leg, face and even through to their backs and still alive. He is amazed at how some of the rebels look, some have barely any clothes, no shoes, and they are dirty. There is some creasing and a few stains throughout the letter but it is in good condition. The next letter is dated Feb 13, 1863 from Belle Plains, Va and is to the Voorhees and states that they had marched from Aquia Creek to Belle Plains where they met up with their Brigade and the mud was knee deep and the wagons and artillery were completely stuck. When they arrived the rebels were yelling across the river to them. He likes his new Colonel - Cladek that he is a man who will protect his men, and he talks about all his friends he is joined up with now. Has some creasing but is in good condition. The envelope is also with the letter. You are bidding at a live auction, please read the terms and conditions. Shipping costs of $8 plus any insurance fees will be added to your final price.
