Notes

Maurice de Vlaminck exhibited with Matisse and Derain at the Salon d'Automne in 1905 and is rated amongst the Fauvists since. He was influenced by the Impressionists, first by Van Gogh eventually more by Cézanne. But with his dynamic lines, lack of details, violent colours and technique his work becomes more and more independent. Despite his many landscapes Vlaminck is considered a painter of moods (Souren Melikian, 2008). The work offered here provides a very strong example of the mature De Vlaminck, a solid composition, a dark background with vivid colours and snow white highlights, a street filled with emotion.
