Notes

Alfred Joseph Casson was born in 1898 in Toronto, Ontario. At age fifteen he became an apprentice at a Hamilton lithography company, and two years later, when his family returned to Toronto, he continued working for printing companies in Toronto while taking evening classes at Central Technical School and taking private classes with artist Harry Britton. In 1926 Casson joined Sampson-Matthews Ltd, specializing in the creation of silkscreen prints. Working devotedly in his off hours on oil and watercolour painting, Casson’s reputation as an painter as well as a master printmaker grew throughout the 1920s, and in 1926 he was invited to join both the Royal Canadian Academy and the renowned Group of Seven. Despite his success as an artist, Casson continued to work with Sampson-Matthews as a master printer, often supervising the printed works by his Group of Seven colleagues and other famous Canadian artists (including Saskatchewan’s Ruth Pawson). AJ Casson died in 1992, in Toronto. While the values of AJ Casson’s artworks increased steadily throughout his career, they skyrocketed in the early 2000s, with paintings sometimes selling for hundreds of thousands of dollars. In 2016 his oil painting “Gathering Storm” sold for a record 1.5 million dollars (Canadian).
