Rendered on board in airbrush paint and other media, image depicts the Statue of Liberty to the left while Browne is on the right; signed on lower margin by Richard S. Duardo and John Valadez (both noted Southern California contemporary artists). Only the Statue of Liberty part made it to Browne's album cover; the somewhat craggy version of him that Duardo and Valadez created was scrapped for a younger image that was used on the back cover. Interestingly, the title song of this album, 'Lives in the Balance,' was critically acclaimed (for its anti-Reaganism stance) and was used in a 1986 episode of "Miami Vice" and in a 1987 PBS documentary called "The Secret Government: The Constitution in Crisis" by journalist Bill Moyers.
