Description: ISRAELS, Jozef (Dutch 1824 - 1911). Portrait of an old gentleman, 1885. Oil on canvas, inscribed 'A mon Ami Roelofs Jozef Israels 1885' (lower left, faded). Framed, small piece from the left side of the frame chipped off. Stable craquelure throughout, several areas of later retouch visible only in ultraviolet light (incl. enhancement of contrast on the collar, the sleeve and the left cheek) as well as some small repairs; canvas slightly sagging.

Earlier attributed as a self-portrait by Brokarts Taxateurs. Obviously, it would make more sense that Israëls would rather give a portrait of his friend than a self-portrait, but we found no solid grounds for either. In any case the association makes this unrecorded work an intriguing discovery. Jozef Israëls and Willem Roelofs are considered to be the most prominent artists of the Hague School.
