Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930)
Born in 1859 in Edinburgh, Scotland, Arthur Conan Doyle studied medicine at the local University. To finance his studies, he began writing in 1879. He returned to his literary activities, as his practice in Southsea/Portsmouth had not enough patients. In 1887, the first story to the detective Sherlock Holmes "A Study in Scarlet" was published. The stories of the world's most famous literary detective were translated in over 50 languages. They were processed in movies, comics, theater plays, and audio dramas, even in the ballet. Around 1920, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was one of the best-paid writers worldwide. (bde)
