Both books are fully preserved. The gilt edges and the edges of the binding show traces of wear. The front and the back board of "the memoirs of Sherlock Holmes" was renewed with the involvement of the old boards, the pastdown was fixed newly. Individual pages are loose. Scattered foxing stains. Handwritten, dated dedication on the free endpaper of ‘The adventures of Sherlock Holmes’. Each book measure 24.4 x 17.5 cm.

Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930)
Born in 1859 in Edinburgh, Scotland, Arthur Conan Doyle studied medicine at the local University. To finance his studies, he began writing in 1879. He returned to his literary activities, as his practice in Southsea/Portsmouth had not enough patients. In 1887, the first story to the detective Sherlock Holmes "A Study in Scarlet" was published. The stories of the world's most famous literary detective were translated in over 50 languages. They were processed in movies, comics, theater plays, and audio dramas, even in the ballet. Around 1920, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was one of the best-paid writers worldwide. (bde)
