More About this Item

Description: [AFRICAN AMERICAN] SCOTT, EMMETT J. American Negro in the World War. No place or publisher specified -- (an edition probably intended for sales by subscription -- variants imprints are known). Publisher's red decorated cloth, minor repair to upper hinge. A clean copy. The author [1873-1957] -- the son of a slave, was a journalist, founding newspaper editor, government official and envoy, educator, and author. He was Booker T. Washington's closest adviser at the Tuskegee Institute and was Special Adviser of Black Affairs to Secretary of War Newton D. Baker, and as such was the highest-ranking African-American in President Woodrow Wilson's administration. Emmett Scott's career in journalism began as a janitor at the 'Houston Post.' The semi-official nature of his book about the first World War is demonstrated by a preface by Secretary Baker and a foreword by General John Pershing. After leaving the War Department, Scott served as Secretary-Treasurer of Howard University. Scarce.
PROVENANCE: Estate of Jim Graham, former Washington, DC, Councilman
