Description: Alex Taller (American, 1899-1975), "Horns", 1971, resin filled, coated, polished and chiseled rhinoceros horn with a matching solid aluminium casting, each with incised signature, height 22 5/8 in., width 6 3/4 in., depth 5 1/4 in., walnut base, overall height 24 in., width 15 in., depth 7 3/4 in Provenance: The horn, presumably acquired Christie, Mason & Woods, London, 1970; the sculpture commissioned from the artist shortly thereafter by George W. Headley III, Lexington, KY; the Headley-Whitney Museum, Lexington, KY (Acc. No. 73.2.7.1). Exhibited: Seaman's Church Institute, Battery Park, NY, October 15-31, 1971. Note: This lot is accompanied by a copy of a May 21, 1971 letter from the artist to George W. Headley describing the reasons for the alumninum casting (versus bronze or bronze and gold plate) as well as the grinding and polishing. This lot is also accompanied by a copy of the December 31, 1970 Vulcan Freight Services, Ltd. bill of lading from Christie, Manson & Woods, London to Lexington, KY. In a copy of an article titled "Retired College Dean Sculpts: Alex Taller Has Whale of a Hobby", by Melinda Robinson, from an unknown publication, Taller is quoted "I like to take materials from nature...
