More About this Item

Description: 1 January 1847 BRUSSELS. Actie van 500 Ned. Guldens. black. No 54853. Early share of this very famous Belgian bank, formed in 1822 by King Willem I of the Netherlands, before Belgian independence. Signed amongst others by Greban, secretary from 1831 to 1850. He was a Frenchman living in Belgium and an important director of textile companies in Gent, as well as several coal-mining companies. The bank was formed with 31.226 1/2 shares, of which 25.800 were acquired by King Willem I personally. The shares paid interest of 5%. The bank was something new in Belgian banking circles; at the time the only banks were family businesses, mainly in Brussels and Antwerp but this "Société Générale" as it was to become known after independence, was of a completely different size. It soon became the most important bank and holding company of the country and remained so during good 150 years. Transfer notes in 1851 and 1861. Hole-cancelled, heavy centre fold with long tear, light edge-damage at bottom edge, and stuck on to thick card. According to our information, only three examples of these early Société Générale shares have ever been found, in 1991. All pieces were placed into major collections (one of which in a State Museum). This share is one of the other two that are in private collections. A most important piece ofBelgian banking history. Rarity 10.
