The monumental standing figure nude but for sandals, holding a tortoiseshell and horn lyre in one outstretched arm, the other arm poised above, raised on a rectangular plinth inscribed in Greek " SOPHOCLES/SALAMIS", further inscribed "J. Donoghue", weathered green patina. Height 44 1/2 inches (1.13 m.) See Illustration Another casting of this model sold in these rooms, June 10, 1987, lot 1885. John Donoghue (1853-1903) won first prize at the Columbian Exposition, Chicago, in 1893 for another casting of this model.
