More About this Item

Description: (AMERICAN REVOLUTION.) BARBER, FRANCIS. Autograph Letter Signed, "F Barber," to his wife ("My dear Nancy"), complaining that lack of provisions prevent the movement of the expedition, reporting that Colonel Brearley had been appointed Chief Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court, expecting that victory against the Indians would require 3 or more months, and speculating that the Indians are looking to their own safety. 2 pages, tall 4to; faint scattered foxing, horizontal folds. (JMR) Wyoming, PA, 5 July 1779
Notes: "To my great disappointment & sorrow we are here yet. Our provisions . . . have not arrived. . . .
". . . I informed you Col. [David] Brearley had resigned . . . . Brearley is appointed Chief Justice of Jersey. . . .
". . . [W]e are to accomplish the total extirpation & destruction of our enemies amongst the Six Nations, and that it will require not less than three months to effect it. . . .
"We have no news of the Indians. It is my opinion they have already taken the alarm, & are consulting their own safety. A few strag[g]lers are watching our situation . . . who now and then strike a blow. . . ."
Barber (1751-1783) served in the Revolution with distinction, having engaged in the battles of Brandywine, Germantown, and Monmouth. Barber served as adjutant general under Sullivan during the expedition against the Indians, and was sent to quell the mutiny of New Jersey and Pennsylvania troops in 1781.
