Hubert Stowitts, the American painter and dancer, travelled for two years throughout India between 1928-1930, living with and painting portraits of a wide range of characters from all walks of Indian life, from Indian potentates to humble craftsmen which formed the basis of the exhibition Vanishing India , hosted by the Los Angeles Museum in 1931.
