Description

Annie Campbell (West Virginia/Ohio, 1862-1951), "Autumnal Landscape," c. 1920, oil on board, signed lower left, measures 13.50 x 18.25 inches, overall in the frame measures 15 x 20 inches. CONDITION: Good, quite dirty, would benefit from a cleaning. After studying in Dayton, Ohio with Hugo Froelich and Otto Walter Beck during the 1890's, she instituted the first formal art classes at Steele High School. From time to time, she left the city for advanced study with Rhoda Holmes Nicholls in Massachusetts and with the celebrated art teacher Arthur Wesley Dow in New York. A strong and sophisticated painter of landscape, flower, and figure pieces, she was also a vigorous supporter of the Dayton Art Institute.
