Description: ANTIQUE circa 1885-1900 (4) page Quack Medicine Pamphlet For St. James's Oil. "St. James's Oil" "put up" by the Carque Pure Food Company, Los Angeles, California and "prepared according to a formula by Dr. H. E Brook, editor of "Brain & Brawn". No Date but price & shipping suggest a time period 1885-1900 In 1906 The "Pure Food & Drug Act was the first of a series of significant consumer protection laws which was enacted by Congress in the 20th century and led to the creation of the FDA. Its main purpose was to ban foreign and interstate traffic in adulterated or mislabeled food and drug products. Previous to this, the patent medicine industry with its high-alcoholic content patent medicines, soothing syrups for infants with opium derivatives, and "red clauses" in newspaper contracts providing that patent medicine ads (upon which most newspapers of the time were dependent) would be withdrawn if the paper expressed support for food and drug regulatory legislation, had manufactured & sold all manner of spurious or downright dangerous patent medicines. This little dozy, St. James's Oil, is a classic example of the quack medicine industry that flourished in that era."

Harry Ellington Brook was a doctor of Naturopathy. He was also, in addition to his "practice", the editor of "Brain And Brawn" magazine, ostensibly a magazine for those who think—-not to awfully well apparently—and the "inventor of various patent medicines. Brook advocated the following around the bend health platform. "Our health platform is as follows: 1. Disease is an effort of nature to remove poisonous or morbid matter from the system, and to restore normal conditions. 2. Drugs taken into the stomach, and filthy animal matter injected into the blood interfere with these healing processes of nature, suppressing symptoms of disease, while never effecting a cure. 3. The germ theory is a superstition. Germs are not the cause but an effect of disease, just as maggots are not the cause of rotting meat. Many germs are not only harmless, but are beneficial and necessary. At any time you may find in the throats of many people who will never get those diseases, the germs of diphtheria, cholera, tuberculosis, and other so-called "infectious" diseases. 4. There is no such thing as "infection" or "contagion," as generally understood. Skin diseases or blood diseases may be passed from one person to another by direct contact, where there is an abrasion of the skin. Therefore, all quarantine is useless annoyance. 5. There are no superfluous organs. A great majority of surgical operations performed now-a-days are not only unnecessary, but dangerous and harmful, and should be forbidden by law. 6. There are rational means of aiding nature to purify the system and restore health. Among these are diet, fasting, active and passive exercise, hydrotherapy, the adjustment of the spine, (osteopathy, chiropractic, etc.), deep breathing of fresh air, sun and air baths, rest, sleep and mental suggestion. 7. Next to air, food is the most vital of all subjects relating to the care of the body. Food is the material of which the body is formed. You cannot make a good suit of clothes out of bad wool. As a man eateth so is he."

Folds to pamphlet & some text was crossed out in pencil on last page, but it still readable, o/w Overall Very Good Condition. Faults do not interfere with readability.
