Literature

Lodewijk de Vadder (1605-1655). Flemish Landscape-painter, draughtsman, etcher and designer of tapestry cartoons; active in Brussels. Member of the guild in Brussels in 1628. Arnold de Jode (printmaker; Flemish; British; 1638 - 1667) Engraver, son of Pieter de Jode II of Antwerp, who had worked with Rubens and van Dyck. Arnold was baptised in 1638 (see 1999 van Dyck catalogue p.377). He was trained by his father, and became a member of the Antwerp guild in 1658. His mother died in 1642, and his father ended his life is severe financial difficulties.Arnold spent his short career in London. It is not known what brought him to London. He made more than a dozen engravings in England. The fullest such list is given by Hollstein, although it is incomplete, lacking some significant plates listed in Arthur Tooker's catalogue of 1675. The earliest of his dated plates is of 1658, and a few others were made for Antwerp publishers or can reasonably be assumed to have been made there. The first dated print made in England appeared in 1666 (cat.145), and four other single-sheets plates were made in London, as well as the illustrations to Browne's book (cat.146), before his death which must have occurred in 1667, the date on his last plate. All his British prints were made for two publishers, Richard Tompson or Alexander Browne. Maarten van den Enden (publisher/printer; printmaker; Flemish; 1605 - 1673)Print publisher. In 1630 he became a member of the Guild of Antwerp. First publisher of Van Dyck's Iconography. He was an important figure in Antwerp until the mid 1650s. Brother-in-law of Pieter de Jode II. His brother was a doctor.
