Notes

Mary Black's engaging and enlightening book, Simplicity, A Grace: Jacob Maentel in Indiana (Evansville, Indiana, 1989) presents two New Harmony, Indiana landscape paintings, now in the collection of The Working Men's Institute Library and Museum, (pp. 25-26). The manner of execution and the style of painting represented in this painting of distillery relates closely to those published examples and it relates closely to land and seascapes which appear in watercolors by Jacob Maentel (Portrait of Jonathan Jaquess of Posey, Indiana, 1841, now also in the collection of the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Center, and illustrated in American Folk Portraits, Paintings, and Drawings from the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Center, ed. Beatrix T. Rumford, Boston, 1981, pp. 141-145.
