More About this Item

Description: China, Yuan Dynasty, 1271 to 1368 CE. A gorgeous black-glazed pottery bowl with an unglazed lower half and foot and entirely glazed interior. The Yuan Dynasty was created by the Mongolian warlord Kublai Khan, who established the Fuliang Ciju (Fuliang Porcelain Bureau). This bowl was produced at the kilns in the Yao Region in modern-day Shanxi Province, which had been operating for a long period of time - since the Tang Dynasty hundreds of years before. During the Yuan period, the market demand for these bowls expanded and as a result kilns increased in size, making them more difficult to fine tune. Glaze was scraped away on the bottom to make them stackable during the kilning process. This particular example has original cracking from an overheated kiln on the bottom of the foot (this does not compromise its stability). Size: 6.67" W (16.9 cm)
