Description: (BERLIN.) Knoblauch. Charte vom auf gemessenen Schiffbauer Damm, mit allen darauf wohnenden Eigenthumern ihre Wohn Stellen, und Sämtliche Seiten Gebäudeh So Auf gnädiger Ordre vom 4te Augt curentis verferfiget worden. Anno 1764. durch Knoblauch. Fine watercolor and ink manuscript map on paper of the central, or Mitte, district of Berlin. 23 1/4x34 inches sheet size; folded vertically at center, few minor edge tears and old reinforcements on verso, some minor roll creasing. [Berlin, 1764]
Notes: Beautiful and important manuscript map following the bend of the Schiffbauer Damm along the River Spree, focusing with minute detail on the residences along the river''s bank and the larger estates of early ship builders, extending into gardens and squares. The Ephraim estate is prominently featured. The original map is eighteenth century; however a later hand (nineteenth century?) has amended the map to discreetly overlay the outlines of several bridges and streets as well as the railway crossing at the Friedrichstraße station. The presumed artist, Knoblauch, has not been further identified, but possibly relates to Johann Christian Knoblauch, a mid-eighteenth century metal merchant whose Knoblauchhaus built in 1761 still remains as a protected monument in Berlin today.
